Request:
I am in excessive debt to the point I cannot pay anything back and I am even behind on my rent. What can I do?

عَنْ عَلِىٍّ رَضِىَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ مُكَاتَباً جَاءَهُ فَقَالَ: إِنِّى قَدْ عَجَزْتُ عَنْ كِتَابَتِى(اي ديني) ؛ فَأَعِنِّى.
قَالَ علي رضي الله عنه: أَلاَ أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ عَلَّمَنِيهِنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ كَانَ عَلَيْكَ مِثْلُ جَبَلِ صِيرٍ دَيْناً أَدَّاهُ اللَّهُ عَنْكَ؟
قَالَ:بلي
قال« قُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِى بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِى بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ »
رواه الترمذي .
Ali ibn Abi Talib (r) reported: A contractor came and he said, “I cannot pay my debt, so help me.” Ali said, “Shall I not teach you translation some words taught to me by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? If you were to have debt as big as a mountain, Allah would repay it for you. Say:
Allahumma ikfinee bi halalika `an haraamika wa ‘ghninee bi fadlika `amman siwaak
O Allah, suffice me with what you have made lawful against what you have made unlawful and make me independent of all those besides you.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563)
