Ya Sheikh, Salam alaikum,
I have been depressed for many years and now the reason has become clear to me. Allah Subhan o Tala blessed me with a unique opportunity for studies at one of the world’s best universities. I wanted to pursue higher studies there but circumstances changed. My career was compromised mainly due to my duty towards my aging parents. Now I have a big career gap, and all the work i have been trying to do for the last 7 or 8 years has born no fruit. I am completely lost and I am afraid I have lost too much time. I need to pray for my career to become a rewarding career which will please Allah Subhan o Tala. Please advise me.

Allah blessed you with a better “university” for a career lasts but a moment but Paradise is eternal, may Allah bless you!
Shaykh Hisham teaches us to keep in mind the Arabic proverb, “al-khayru fima waqa`a – the best is in what took place.” Don’t look back saying “if only” or “what if” but rather look forward, seeing the opportunity to care for your aging parents was the greatest blessing Allah ever could have sent you. As the Prophet of Allah (s) said:
Let him be humbled into dust; let him be humbled into dust; Let him be humbled into dust. It was said: “O Messenger of Allah! Who is he?” He said: “He who sees either of his parents during their old age or he sees both of them, but he does not enter Paradise.” (Sahih Muslim)
You have already received that Paradise blessing, so whatever else you do in life is only to add to it.
