Musabba’at

Question:

assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

The musabba’at found in Imam Haddad’s wird al kabir and mentioned by Imam Ghazali in the ihya differs from the version of musabba’at found in the qadiri prayer book, “emanations of lordly grace” translated by Muhtar Holland and published by Al Baz. Why is this and which version of the ten sevenfold repetitions is better to recite?

Answer:

`Alaykum as-Salam,

Manuscript lessons [versions] of the books of Shaykh `Abd al-Qadir differ greatly and translators sometimes leave out wordings either by choice or because they do not know of them. It is better to rely on something that is confirmed in more than one manuscript and more than one work. In this case, one should use the version found in Imam Haddad and Imam Ghazali’s books, and Allah knows best.
