obedience to parent for this specific request

Question:

Selamwalikum
I just recentley got a black turban since Mawlana Shaykh Nazim had asked his murids to do so. I did, and my dad says to not wear it outside ppl will think your a terrorist. Should I obey or not? Maulana sheikh was the one to request his murids to wear a turban.

Answer:

It is always best in things which might be controversial to err on the side of caution, and your father is right in his concern. A rule of thumb is that we should avoid following our shaykh becoming a source of controversy with our parents, family, friends or associates as much as possible. Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani has explained to the murids that they should wear the black turban at home or in the mosque but not in public as it might incite controversy.
