If you can read Arabic the nasiha books of Imam Abu al-Layth al-Samarqandi (Bustan al-`Arifin, Tanbih al-Ghafilin, Qurrat al-`Uyun) address what you asked and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim recommends them.
