Going out without mahram

Question:

Shaykh Hisham earlier said, “Ladies can go for dhikr if they have a mahram accompanying them.” http://www.eshaykh.com/family/working-mothers/

What is the purpose and history of this ruling? I am 24, unmarried and do not live near any mahram. Should I stop attending the dhikr in my city?

Answer:

The purpose of the ruling is protection of ladies in a time of increased fitna. You can go to dhikr and attend, and anyone in that position who has no mahram to accompany her can have a lady friend accompany her, just as when she is going to pray at the mosque at`Isha time or something similar.
