Photos of the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam)?

Question:

Dear Shaykh Hisham,

Assalamu alaykum. Please can you answer this question:

I am a murid of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim and some years ago another murid gave a photo to me and said that it was a photo of the Prophet (saw) when the Prophet (saw) was a boy which had been taken based on a sketch by Bahira the monk.

Later I became friends with a Western revert professor of Islam who said that this was a well-known photograph and was not of the Prophet (saw). I came home confused and Googled and found the picture which our murid friend had given us!

Please can you tell me if my fellow murid was correct or the professor?

Jazakallah.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

A picture cannot be taken of the Prophet (s), as he is subtle, created from light, without a shadow, so we don’t agree on that.
