Adhaan and Iqamah

Question:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Blessings be upon the Most Beloved and his family.
As-Salāmu `Alaykum Maulana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani, my friend told me that if the Adhaan and Iqamah is recited in a melodious tune, thus making it ‘musical’, it is considered haram..is this true? I am not a learned person so with Allah’s permission, I hope you can enlighten me on this issue…

Answer:

`Alaykum as-Salam,

We were commanded to recite even the Qur’an in a melodious tune and the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) said, “whoever does not do it is not one of us”. The forbidden singing is erotic and tavern singing, not calling people to prayer. This said, correct adhan melody has criteria that are known to those who studied them.
