Salamu Alaikum. If a mureed on the path has illegal sexual intercourse with someone. Can he still make progress on the path after repenting? Or is the path cut off for him?

Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani always cites the hadith which goes:
They asked the Prophet (s) if a believer could possibly steal, to which he replied, “it is possible.” They asked “can a mu’min (believer) commit adultery?” to which the Prophet (s) replied ” it is possible.” Then they asked, “can a mu’min lie?” and the Prophet (s) “as for that, no.”
Seek heartfelt forgiveness through the Prophet (s) and his shafa`ah, intercession, and constantly recite the du`a of the Saint of Rajab daily, who did far worse and was not only forgiven but granted a high station of sainthood.
