Fortune-tellers

Question:

Assalamu Alaikum

My question regards that of so-called fortune-tellers or persons who profess that they can see the future.

Last year I was introduced to an older Muslim woman (around 80 years old), who seemed very pious but unbeknownst to me, she has/had the ability to see things both past and future and unfortunately told me about them.

She said things about my future that involved certain people that no one in my family could possibly know. Now I’ve read extensively that Jinn are involved in this sort of thing, so my question is are Jinn always involved? Can someone be born with the gift to be able to see things? I know that I have had visions before, although very brief and have had dreams come true.

Is there even a remote possibility that a human being could be bestowed with such a gift?

Shukran for your time.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

As Allah’s Prophet (s) says in the hadith about fortune tellers “even if they speak the truth, they are lying,”  meaning it is not recommended to seek such advice or to rely on it because it is based on un-Islamic practices and may lead to negative consequences.
