Love and obedience to parents

Question:

Assalamualaikum,
I’m having issues with being obedient to my parents and giving them the love and respect with the heart, mind and soul the way they deserve. I love them but somehow I’m not able to feel love for them as I see other people revere their parents. It is especially so for my mom. Perhaps the way my childhood went can be a factor and some other incidents a cause of this. But a true mumin will not be so and I’ve seen other people love their parents despite having terrible relations with them in the past. I feel terrible because my iman is not complete until I give them the respect, service and love they deserve.

Please advise me. I’m afraid this behaviour of mine may nullify acts I may do to seek Allah SWT.

Answer:

Wa`alaykumussalam,
Allah Almighty orders us in several places in the Qur’an:

وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا

Wa bi ‘l-waalidayni ihsaanaa.
And be kind to your parents. (Surat al-‘Israa, 17:23)

Ask Allah to open your heart to them. You may recite this short verse with the intention that Allah dresses you with Ihsan towards them. Insha Allah, we pray you shall be the best child to your parents.
