Question:

Asalamu Alaykum,

I don’t know what to do, there’s this guy that I love. He has asked me to marry him, but he doesn’t do Mawlid or believe in my sheikh, Mawlana sheikh Nazim. I know that in Islam children follow on what the father is, and he calls himself Sunni but he isn’t. What should I do? How do I know I’m making the right decision?

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,

If Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (Allah bless his secret) is your shaykh then he is closer to you than your own father. If you can love someone who refuses to love your father then go ahead and marry him. Sunna means the Way of our Prophet (upon him blessings and peace); if you are Prophet’s follower yet you can love someone whom you yourself describe as non-Sunni then go ahead and marry him. Otherwise, then Allah is Most Rich and Generous, He will send a better match for you and your future family.
