Marriage to non-Barelvi

Question:

Assalamaykoom,

I am in a tough situation and need some guidance.

I am trying to marry a man I love who says he and his family are part of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jammah and they are Sunni Hanafi. My family is Barelvi. My family calls him and his family Wahabi/Deobandi because they go to a different masjid which accepts all Muslims. His family does not concern themselves with the conflicts of the sects or participate. He told me he has no issues with the Barelvi aqeeda as we are all Sunni Hanafis. My dad and brother refuse to let me marry him and say that I will go to hell if I marry him. They are acting like I am bringing home a non-Muslim. I do not want to be in a haraam relationship with him so I am trying to marry him. Please advise. Thank you.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

In which Muslim `aqida did you find that it’s ok to be in a haram relationship with a man because your family doesn’t accept him?

In-sha-Allah it’s best to leave these titles and look at the character of the man and his family.

In-sha-Allah Mawlana Shaykh Hisham is praying for you.
