Question:

Salam ‘alaykum Shaykh Gibril

I am looking for the hadith where Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r) donated all his wealth and Sayyidina ‘Umar (r) half and the Prophet (s) said to Sayyidina ‘Umar (r) your iman is half that of Abu Bakr.

barak-Allahu feek!

Answer:

`Alaykum Salam,

Here you go, from my book “Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (radya Allah `anh):

When the Prophet (s) ordered the Companions to pay charity, ‘Umar said, “This order was given at a time when I had property, so I said, ‘Today I shall surpass Abu Bakr if I am ever to surpass him!’ Then I brought half of my property. The Prophet (s) said, ‘What did you leave for your family?’ He replied, ‘I left for them Allah and His Prophet.’ When I saw this I said, ‘By Allah I shall never surpass him in anything.'”

Narrated from Aslam al-`Adawi by Tirmidhi (hasan sahih), Abu Dawud, al-Darimi, al-Bazzar (1:263, 1:394), al-Hakim (1990 ed. 1:574 sahih `ala shari Muslim), al-Bayhaqi in the Sunan (4:190), al-Dya al-Maqdisi in al-Mukhtara (1:174), and other.
