Forgiveness of Sins – Subhanallah wa bihamdihi

Question:

Assalamu Alaykum,

When Hadith state that if a person recites subhanallah wa bihamdihi 100 times daily, they will have their sins forgiven even if they are as numerous as the foam on the sea, does this include both major and minor sins, or just minor ones?

Answer:

`Alaykum as-salam,

All the hadiths that mention good deeds that reap general forgiveness in such a way refer to sins unconditionally but we also know that grave sins (kaba’ir) require a specific repentence with its conditions (contrition, restoring the rights of victims, and resolving to not recidivate). The upshot is that such good deeds will qualify one for the Prophetic intercession per the hadith: “My intercession is for those of my Community who committed grave sins.”
