Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

As narrated in al-Bukhari, Muslim, the Sunan and the Musnad, the angels ask the dead person: “What did you use to say/believe about this man (ma kunta taqul fi hadha al-rajul)?” And this question presupposes the ability to recognize the precise identity meant by the terms “this man.” Some authentic versions specify “This man that was sent among you,” “This man, Muhammad,” and “This man that was among you and who went by the name Muhammad.” Furthermore, the demonstrative adjective hadha (“this”) indicates nearness and familiarity, i.e. recognizability. All this indicates that the identity of the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) will be made crystal-clear to the person who is being questioned, whether graphically or physically or mentally or otherwise–Allah knows best.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (Allah have mercy on him) was asked this precise question and he replied: “As for the question whether the veil will be lifted for the dead person so that he will be able to see the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) and the angel says to him: ‘What do you say about this man?’ the reply is that such has not been mentioned in any authentic report; rather, it was claimed by someone who did not adduce anything in support of such a claim other than the words ‘concerning this man’, as the demonstrative with the term ‘this’ (hadha) is used for someone present; and this is meaningless because he is present to the mind.” Ibn Hajar, al-Jawab al-Kaafi `an al-Su’al al-Khaafi, in the fourth volume of Majmu`at al-Rasa’il al-Muniriyya. This reply was endorsed by Imam al-Suyuti in his Sharh al-Sudur bi-Sharhi Hal al-Mawta wal-Qubur and al-Fawz al-`Azim fil Liqa’ al-Karim.

The hadith goes on to say that the Believer will reply, “Muhammad the Messenger of Allah and His servant” while the unbeliever will reply, “Uh, uh, I don’t know.” May Allah Most High grant us firm knowledge and safety here and hereafter.
