books to learn basic hanafi fiqh

Question:

As salam alaykum wr wb Mawlana Shaykh Hisham and respected scholars,

We thank you for this wonderful and magnificent website, the website the whole Ummah was waiting for.

We recently bought a Manual of basic Hanafi Fiqh : “Nur al-Hudah, the light of guidance” by Imam Hasan Shurunbulali, translated from the Arabic by Wesam Charkawi.

We would like to know of it is a reliable book to learn basic Hanafi fiqh. (prayer, ablution, fasting etc.) and what other French or English book, you will recommend to learn basic Hanafi fiqh. (we unfortunately don’t read Arabic)

Please pray for us and forgive our bad manners inshAllah. Alf salam alaykum ?

Answer:

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

The translation is a reasonably good one. However, Nur al-Idah is a very detailed text that can be confusing as a first-text. I would recommend Ascent to Felicity (Maraqi al-Sa`adat), also by Imam Shurunbulali, instead. It has been very ably translated by Shaykh Faraz A. Khan, and published by White Thread Press.

Barak Allahu feekum.
