Mihrabs with YA MUHAMMAD written on them

Question:

Some of the mosques in the UK have in writing over their mihrabs: YA ALLAH on the right and YA MUHAMMAD on the left. The “Salafis” claim that YA MUHAMMAD is shirk khafiy (hidden polytheism). What is your opinion? And is this haram according to the Four Schools?

Answer:

It is narrated from `Uthman b. Hunayf that a blind man came to the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, and said, “Messenger of Allah, verily I am a blind man, so supplicate to Allah that He heal me. He said, “Or shall I rather leave you be?” He said, “Supplicate to Allah for me!” two or three times. He said, “Make ablution then pray two rakaats then say, ‘O Allah! I am asking you and turning to you by your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy. YA MUHAMMAD, verily I am turning with you to Allah so that He shall fulfill my need,’ or ‘my need for so and so,’ or ‘my need in such and such.’ O Allah, accept my Prophet’s intercession for me, and accept my intercession for myself.'”

This is a sahih hadith by consensus. Our question is: does the Messenger ever command shirk? What is your opinion? And does any sane person doubt that the answer is, No, verily the Messenger — upon him blessings and peace — never orders other than guidance! Therefore leave behind those deviants and never listen to them.
