Jummah prayers

Question:

Respected Sheikhs and beloved staff Allah reward you for your efforts in giving us understanding. My question is during jummah what should we read i.e numbers of rakat. After the adhan i have been reading 4 rakat sunnat then the 2 rakats for jummah behind the imam, when iqamat is given. After jummah what should we be reading after jummah is done? do we carry on and read 4 rakat fardh 2 sunnat and 2 nafl? or does the jummah prayer replace the fardh part of zuhr? Allah reward you and keep you as our guide and shining light.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

In Hanafi madhab (Imam Abu Yusuf) the total number of rak’ats is 14:

4 Sunnah Mu’akkadah before Fardh
2 Fardh of Jumuah
4 Sunnah Muakkadah after Fardh
2 Sunnah
2 Nafilah

There is an opinion reached after the disappearance of Ottoman Khilaafah that 16 rak’ats are to be offered:

4 Sunnah Mu’akkadah of Jumu’ah before Fardh
2 Fardh of Jumu’ah
4 Sunnah Muakkadah
4 Sunnah Muakkadah
Sunnah Muakkadah
