Answer:
Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim,
For Ahl al-Sunna wal-Jama`a, al-Dafi` is not among the Divine Names that are known through their explicit and verbatim mention in the Qur’an, the Sunnah, or the Consensus (Ijma`) and are non-inferable grammatically. Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Ash`ari said, as cited in Ibn al-Subki’s Tabaqat al-Shafi`iyyat al-Kubra (3:358):
“My method in the acceptance of the Names of Allah is Law-based authorization without regard to lexical analogy.”
Similarly Ibn Khafif said in his `Aqida:
“The Divine Attributes are obtained only from the transmitted sources, that is, either what Allah said o Himself, or what the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) said of Him, or what the Muslims concur about in relation to a given Attribute.”
This was summed up in verse 39 of Jawharat al-Tawhid:
<<It was decided that the Divine Names are ordained and so are His Attributes, therefore memorize the transmitted evidence.>>
Shaykh Muhammad Muhyi al-Din `Abd al-Hamid in his supercommentary on `Abd al-Salam al-Laqani’s (d. 1078/1667) explanation of Jawharat al-Tawhid entitled Ithaf al-Murid said regarding the above verse:
“The meaning of the Names and Attributes being ordained and non-inferable is that it is not permitted for anyone to assert an Attribute or a Name for Allah except if there is an explicit text (nass) from Allah or His Prophet allowing the use of such a Name or Attribute. . . . Even if the Name or Attribute point to pure perfection, Ahl al-Sunnaj hold that it is not permitted to apply either to Allah without a specific permission. The Mu`tazilah considered that it is permitted to assert [a Name or Attribute] the meaning of which describes Allah, provided it does not suggest any imperfection.”
Thus, the Zaydi scholar Muhammad b. al-Wazir (775-840/1373-1437) cites al-Dafi` it among the “inferences from the glorious lordly verbs” (al-mushtaqqaat min al-af`aal al-Rabbaniyyat al-Hameeda) and which inferences, he said, “are countless.” In this case, al-Dafi` is inferred from the verbal noun (masdar) daf` in Qur’an 2:251 and 22:40. Its abjad value is alif+lam+dal+alif+fa’+`ayn = 1+30+4+1+80+70 = 186
