Dance

Question:

Salam ya shaikh,

I was attending a zikir and the imam start a qasidah of Ya Hanana. I was really enjoying the qasidah then we all stand up and start to bow forward with the hand gesture. Seem to be grabbing and moving the arm towards the body then releasing it downward. I am new to this and would like to know if that is a form of Sufi Dance as well. I saw Grand Syaikh was surrounding by the zakirin during the hadrah. Please educate me. Kuno thalibun.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Yes, it is a form of Sufi hadrah, or “dance” as you mentioned. It is as inspiration comes to move, taking the hand to the chest, which contains the points of spirituality, and releasing the energy acquired there downwards towards everyone. And Allah knows best.
