Definition of Hal

Question:

Salam Aleykum,

Could you please share with me a definition of the state of  ” hal ” so that I can explain to my non Sufi friends what it is. Thank you.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Hal means state. In Sufi context it relates to the manifestations (tajalli) coming from the Divine Presence on the servant.

For example a state of contraction (qabd) would cause the servant to be sad, depressed or upset whereas a state of expansion (bast) could invoke joy, exuberance, etc.
