Praying for conversion of someone specific

Question:

Assalam Alaykum,

I wanted to know whether it is possible to pray for the guidance of ONE specific non-Muslim person that one knows? Is it possible to pray for such a non-Muslim even if one knows that there are other character flaws this person has – say a particular addiction, in other-words if his/her character may not be upright even outside of the faith?

My regards to Sheikh Haddaad whose writings have had a great influence on me for close to 10 years now.

Answer:

Alaykum salam,

May Allah Most High bless you and reward you. We are helpless were it not that Allah gave us life with Mawlana.
Making dua for an individual guidance is sunna. Holy Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) would say ‘O Allah guide one of the two Umars’ meaning ibn al-Khattab and ibn al-Hakam. When Allah showed him that the latter would not be guided, he focused his tawajjuh on Sayyidina Umar, who then entered Islam.
