Can circumcision be skipped for my son with autism?

Question:

Assalamu alaikum shaikh,
My son is 8 year old,yet to be verbal and has autism..
He is not yet done Circumcision yet,i know it is very important, but is it allowed to skip it?since he is yet to be verbal and has autism, and he will not cope nor understand.

Answer:

As-Salamu ‘Alaikum,

Circumcision is not one of the Five Pillars of Islam. This ritual is an act of purification. It links the person to the Prophet Ibraheem a.s.. Refer to Kur’an, 5:7 and 16:123.
The Prophet Muhammad (saws) said: “The Prophet Ibraheem was circumcised when he was 80 years old.” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim and Ahmad)
In this particular case the act of circumcision can be delayed when the person will be able to understand the meaning of the ritual, otherwise it can be skipped. Allah knows best.
