Question:
Assalamu 3aliekum,
I am a young woman who has short hair, or “like a boy’s haircut.” My head is not shaved, I simply have a pixie cut. I like short hair because it is manageable and attracts less attention. In my country women are not considered attractive unless they have long hair. Also, my husband does not approve of me wearing a hijab but has no problem with short hair so it is a compromise.
My problem is that my mother does not like my short hair and says it is haram for women to imitate men. But although I have short hair, I am feminine and would never be mistaken for a male. Can you please tell me if:
#1) I should grow my hair to please my mother, since Islam places much importance on mothers.
#2) If I should not have short hair because Islam prefers otherwise.
Salam.
Answer:
wa `alaykum salam,
Grow your hair out more to please your mother.
