Being left handed

Question:

Assalaamualaikum Mawlana Shaykh Hisham and eshaykh staff,

May Allah bless you and your loved ones, Shaykh, and also the eshaykh staff and their loved ones.

I am left handed and wonder about the verses from The Quran relating to the companions of the left hand. am i committing a sin by using my left hand predominantly?

I have seen that in tariqa using your left hand to accept something from another person not welcome.

Can you please explain Islam’s position on being born left handed?

JazakAllah Khair

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

If a person has a problem preventing him from using his right hand such as being paralyzed and so on he is excused. Imam An-Nawawai (May Allah have mercy on him) said: “If one has an excuse for not eating and drinking with his right hand, such as sickness or an injury, then this is not Makruh (blameworthy)…”
