Is Wahabism kufr?

Question:

The Wahabis have some terrible beliefs about Allah (like anthropomorphism and ascribing limitations and defects) and make horrific insults against Rasool Allah (sallah Allahu aleyhi wasalam) ,essentially degrading him to the status of any old person and forbidding great love for him (na’uthubillah). On top of that they reject Ahl as-Sunna beliefs on the Awliya and even make takfir on Sayiddna Abdul Qadir Jilani and Imam al Ghazali. What is the position of Sunni scholars on these people? Is there ijmaa that they are kuffar?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

All that you said is correct, but the position of our shuyukh is not to make takfir of any of the Ahl al-Qiblah, but instead seek to find what unifies us and correct what is wrong through instruction, reprimand, and warning. Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani has an entire series of suhbats directed at correcting the Wahabis entitled “O Wahabi and Salafi `Ulama“, in which he clearly addresses them with the term of respect, `ulama, scholars, not as unbelievers, yet in these talks seeks to correct their deviated understandings of `aqidah.

Read what Shaykh Gibril said in “Deobandis, Tablighi Jama`at and Wahabis“:

No, we do not declare any of them kafir. Rather, we denounce what is wrong and we enjoin what is right however bitter, without school partisanship; and we say as Allah Most High says and as our well-guided Rabbani elders taught us: {For each there is a direction to which he turns his face. So compete with one another in good deeds. Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together. Truly Allah has power over all things} (2:148).

And Allah knows best. May He unite us all and take us back to Him as followers of the Sunna and adherents to the Congregation.
