Disturbing fatwas

Question:

Assalamualaikum Mawlana Shaikh Hisham and all eshaykh staff,
Someone told me that it is lawful in Islam and fatwas have been given that people who slander the Angel Gibrael A.s, The Sahaba, or contest the Prophet S.a.w being the last Prophet are wajib ul qatl (lawful to kill). I don’t know what to say when they tell me that the ulema or muftis have given such fatwas. But it disturbs me, and I know this is not our way. So could you please in light of shariah give me an answer, so I may make people understand.

JazakAllah.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Slander against the Prophet (s) and his companions etc. is Kufr or heresy. The one who is present should defend Prophet (s) and his companions. He should inform this person that he is committing a major sin for which he should repent to Allah. If the slanderer persists in his wickedness after your advice then your duty is to abandon this person.

Scholars agreed that punishment on one who slanders a chaste innocent person is eighty lashes and to carry out this “hadd” is obligatory.
