Permissibility of insurance policies

Question:

  • I own my own house which I rent out. Is it permissible to have insurance for:
  1. the house,
  2. Landlords’ insurance (I am more concerned about public liability, rather than loss of rent, but I think the policies generally include both),
  3. Home contents insurance?

Policies often include all the above. Many people say insurance, mortgages, etc, are haram, but when one considers the amount of money that could be lost after a lifetime of savings (e.g. one’s house) or the payouts for a public liability lawsuit etc., it seems a reasonable necessity in the West to have such policies.

  • Also, concerning car insurance, is it permissible to have 3rd party property liability insurance (i.e. to cover myself, if I accidentally bump into someone else’s new $300,000 Porsche for example)?
