Prayer Question

Question:

Salaam,

Forgive me.

I believed that the moment I took baya, I was like a newborn.I made intention to be a better Muslim. From the day I took baya, I started afresh and monitor my prayers.

Recently my wife asked Mawlana and was informed that we should pay back all our prayers we missed. I am having doubts.

-Should I continue trying to imitate my Shaykh in my prayers with the intention that I am starting afresh and inshallah Allah has forgiven me as I was only a Muslim by name.

or

-Should I stop all my sunnah prayers and just do pay back my prayers(kadhak) before and after my fardhu prayers.

I am trying to follow Mawlana praying habits. For me it is a new start everytime I renew baya. Hence,if I miss a prayer after that, I instantly pay up before my sunnah prayers.Am I wrong Shaykh?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

So while the renewing of baya` is a fadilah, and has its blessing, and yes, insha-Allah will purify you and your family, as is our belief, at the same time we must keep the Shari`ah.

So your wife is correct, since you are a born Muslim you need to make-up the prayers you missed since you became mature. Our mashaykh teach that specifically because many non-practising Muslims come and take baya` and ask what they must do, and they teach to make the niyyah, intention, to fulfill this obligation and continue until all of the missed prayers are made up. What we heard from our shuyukh and from different scholars, is that with every fard prayer you can do one,  two or three makeup (qada) prayers and keep constant in making these up until you feel you have completed all your  missing prayers.
