Women at Graveyards

Question:

Assalamou ‘alaikum,

I want to know whether women are allowed to visit mazar of pious Muslims and graveyards. What are the standpoints of eminent ulamas on this issue?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Visiting graves, especially the graves of our relatives, friends and pious Muslims is recommended. This is in accordance with a hadith found in Sahih Muslim.

This recommendation is general and does not exclude women (Supported by Hanafi and Shafi’ii School). The Prophet (SAWS) once found a woman crying in the cemetery. He did not chase her out but told her not to cry.

Frequent visitation of cemeteries by women is not permissible.
