URGENT QUESTION RE HAJJ TAWAF

Question:

Assalamu Alaykum,

My family have asked me an urgent question.

According to the Hanafi school of thought can the Tawaf and the Sahih done during the Hajj be done before the start of Hajj if one does this with intention of it being for Hajj? Will this be acceptable?

They are on Hajj with my brother-in-law who is Nashbandi Mujaddidi. His Shaykh is part of the group and The Shaykh has said that they are going to do this. Some group members are elderly and have health problems, they have said this to make it easier for all the group.

My family want clarification before doing this. If it was me I would have done it as they are a Pious man of Allah.

Allah know best and I ask for you quick response as I believe they will be doing this today at some point and do not want them to part and divide from group.

JazakAllah Khair

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

There are three Tawafs: Qudum (arrival), Ifada (dispersal), and Wada` (farewell). The first and last are Sunnah but the middle one is obligatory and a Rukn (integral) in all four Schools; furthermore, by definition, Ifada takes place after the Day of `Arafa and therefore cannot be performed before the start of Hajj.

Sa`y is also obligatory and has to take place directly after a Tawaf; this should be the Tawaf of Ifada, so that one obligatory ritual follow another obligatory ritual. However, to make things easier for the pilgrims, it is allowed to perform Sa`y after the Sunnah Tawaf of Qudum, i.e. early and before `Arafa.

If they already did the tawaf of qudum for `Umrah, they can first do a nafl tawaf and then do sa`y with the intention of fulfilling the requirement of Hajj. This is all acceptable in the Hanafi Madh-hab.
