wa ‘alaykum salam,

As Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani has explained in many suhbats, that when you recite salawat on the Prophet (s) then Allah himself returns your greeting ten times. So what do you think the effect of Allah’s greetings on you is? They only give us to taste a drop because we could not carry more.

Dream: Mawlana Shaikh Nazim in my dream

Dream:

Salam, It was around morning 10 am I think quite sometime ago after I became disciple ; saw Mawlana Shaikh Nazim was wearing white attire like the kind of robe he wears, and was putting on a white robe on me, telling me I was to be sacrificed in the name of God. I could feel fear even in my dreams and saying but what about my parents I will miss them, i am not ready to die I don’t want to die now, I could feel fear and I think I woke up almost crying shivering a bit it almost shook something inside me, don’t know the exact meaning of this dream but thought at an odd time maybe the devil showed me a scary dream to scare me about death. I want to really know whats the significance. I have never met Mawlana Shaikh Nazim in person.

Interpretation:

wa `alaykum salam,

It means you are a disciple of Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani though you haven’t met and you have been granted in the dream to reach the level of “die before you die” about which Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani said, in the suhbat Die before you die“:

All saints have to go through an experience at least once in their life: to die before they die. The Prophet (s) said to the Companions, “Whoever wants to see someone who passed away before he has passed away, let him look at Abu Bakr as-Siddiq.” He killed his ego. When are all of us going to die? God may give us the power to kill our ego and make ourselves “die before we die.”

Work hard to reach that level in physical life by following the Shaykh with love and obedience, insha-Allah.

Forced Engagment

Question:

Asalkium beloved staff,May ALLAHS mercy be upon you all.

I have a question in regards to forced marriage in islam. My sister who has now been enagaged to a man she doesnt like for almost 6 years, doesnt feel her heart connected to the guy,she cryed and said she didnt want to get enagaged to this guy when the people involved were forcing her at the time, but they forced her anyways. And the only reason my sister said she will get married to this guy is for the sake of my mum and the family but other than that she doesnt love him,but my mum has different thoughts and said no that cant be right she has to love him from the heart, and if she doesnt she will disown her and kick her out, please give me reference to forced marriage and what she should do.

regards may ALLAH have mercy on you ALL.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Shaykh Seraj Hendricks wrote in “A study in the understanding of authority and the abuse of power in Muslim marriages” :

Islam afforded women unprecedented rights… She has the right the right to property, exclusive rights to her wealth, the right to equal pay for equal work, the right to the mut’a (or compensation) in divorce, the right to social equality and educational opportunities, the right to military service, the right to resist a forced marriage, the right to terminate a marriage of an abusive husband etc. And all these rights emanate from the example set by our Prophet Muhammad (s) whose nature and character according to Sayyidatuna `Aysha was indeed the Quran (kana khuluquhu al-Quran).

About Samson

Question:

Salam wa aleykum ya Mawlana!

I would like to know the position that Islam gives to Samson, he was the Prophet as quoted in the Bible? Is there any religious tradition to confirm that he was a Prophet? One person told me that he was not a prophet but he is ignorant of religion and another told me that he was. I’d love to know if he was or not and what his story is possible under Islam. Could you please answer me this question?

Jazakallahu Khayr

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

There is no reason to doubt the sanctity of Samson or Shamsun, peace be upon him, in the understanding of Classical Islam. This is not to say that the Biblical account of Samson is accepted in all its details by Muslim authorities. To clarify the differences between the Bible and the Islamic perspective, please consult the account transmitted by Tabari in his History of Prophets and Kings.

According to the historian Tha`labi, the heroic example of Shamsun was held up by the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and a comparable narration appears in Shaykh as-Sufuri’s Nuzhat al-majalis wa mutakhab al-nafa’is. In California, Hajjah Amina `Adil – may Allah sanctify her secret – took this subject as the focus of a remarkable sohbet. The following is from Tha`labi’s Lives of the Prophets:

Abu `Amr al- `Iraqi told us according to his isnad on the authority of Ibn Abi Najih that the Prophet mentioned a man from the Children of Israel who wore armour (striving) in the way of God for one thousand months. The Muslims were amazed at that, so God revealed: “Lo, He revealed it on the Night of Power. And what will explain to you the Night of Power? The Night of Power is better than one thousand months“, during which that man wore armour (striving) in the way of God.

Tabari relates that the weapon of Shamsun, peace be upon him, was the jawbone of a camel. It is therefore of interest to recall that the first blow struck in defense of Islam was with the jawbone of a camel, wielded by the Cavalier of Islam Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, seemingly by force of circumstance. Yet since the Last Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said: “The wise of this community are like the prophets of the Children of Israel,” this conformity of signs may very well be a simple confirmation of this tradition.

Islam, Chinese Internal Martial Arts, and Cultural Adaptation

Question:

As-salamu Alaikum!

I’m interested in learning about how Chinese Muslims adapted Chinese Internal Martial Arts to Sufi (usually, I believe, Naqshbandi) practices. As a student of some of these arts (and the Japanese art Aikido) I’m interested in how concepts like ‘qi’ were translated in practice. I’ve found Sachiko Murata’s work in this regard especially helpful linguistically, however, I’m curious about the practical side of it.

(I also can’t help but notice more than a little resemblance between Ueshiba Morihei Osensei’s notion of “Ki” and ash-Shaykh al-Akbar‘s development of the principle of Nafs al-Rahman.)

Anyway, my question: do you know of any resources for researching this development? Particularly from a Naqshbandi perspective? On a MA nerd level: do you know of any Naqshbandi or other Sufi teachers teaching the Chinese Muslim IMA (Or Aikido, for that matter) within an Islamic context in the US?

Thank you!

Peace,

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

To begin with, special care must be taken with terminology. For example, the root n-f-s may pertain to a Divine Reality – in this instance, ar-Rahman – or to the human dimension of the soul. There should be no confusion between these two uses of similar words.

The soul of a culture finds expression in its traditional arts, that in turn provide its artists with methods for the cultivation of the individual soul. Now, it is especially through the martial arts that the breath is disciplined, as was mentioned in an earlier post. This is the domain of qi; but this is not the domain of spirituality. Concerning the martial arts of China specifically, the contribution of the Hui or Chinese Muslims is of course profound, and so it is possible to speak of forms that have been stamped by the characteristics of the Hui. But if the Hui have played an essential role in the transmission of the “internal” art of Hsing Yi, for example, this is still not a matter of adapting an art of the soul to take the place of a spiritual path.

Yet since the soul plays an intermediary role between the spirit and the body, it is not impossible for the spiritual to be embodied in the martial, for it is of course the example of the Prophet of Islam, peace and blessings be upon him. To take a Naqshbandi example, the great Sayyid Amir Kulal – may Allah sanctify his secret – was a master of the spiritual path and of wrestling, a martial art still practiced in Central Asia. Honored above all others in Islam, however, is the martial art of archery; remarkable in the present context is that the Hui look to the pir of archery – the Faris ul-Islam Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him – as the emissary of the Prophet to China. The spiritual dimension of archery is clearly established in the Traditions, and has been obvious enough to Zen Buddhists.

The case of Buddhism, however, is actually different, since the historical Buddha renounced the warrior education of his Kshatriya caste. Nevertheless, it was the Buddhist patriarch Bodhidharma who is held to have taught the monks of Shaolin their martial art. Here is an example of a martial art serving to prepare initiates for the discipline of spirituality. As with archery among Buddhists, it seems inappropriate to consider these arts as expressions in themselves of Buddhist spirituality, when the founder of that spirituality had renounced them. On the other hand, the role of Taoism in the Chinese martial arts is closer to the Islamic example, especially when considering the Taoist foundations of myriad “internal” forms, such as Tai Chi Chuan.

Even if martial arts are considered solely as preparation for the discipline of spirituality, the question must once again be raised as to their suitability to the path of Sufism. Specifically, how well do the Shinto foundations of Aikido accord with this path? Concerning Taoism, it is interesting at least to note that Hui scholars identify Fu Xi of Taoism as Japheth, the son of Noah, peace be upon them, and therefore belonging to the history of Islam. Concerning specific techniques, it may be observed that striking the face of the opponent is an effective method of fighting, and is widely practiced; but this is in clear violation of the order of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, as recorded in the Sahih hadith. No doubt discipline (ridaya) must be in harmony with the Divine Pleasure (radiya); therefore your questioning after Sufi teachers is far from foolish.

There remains to be addressed the special case of Tan Tui among the Chinese martial arts, especially since it is sometimes traced to a legendary figure named “Chamir” from Eastern Turkestan. It is significant that the history of this figure is usually situated in the early 17th century, that is, the very period when the spiritual heirs of Makhdum al-`Azam Ahmad Kasani – may Allah sanctify their secrets – introduced the Naqshbandi Order into China and Tibet from Eastern Turkestan. Tan Tui is said to have been composed originally of 28 “roads,” one for each letter of the Arabic alphabet, and that these were subsequently reduced to ten. Given the importance in Sufism of the Science of Letters, it seems likely that this practice had a Naqshbandi inspiration; yet with its reduction of “roads,” and with  its widespread popularity in variant forms, it also seems likely that the correspondences between “roads” and letters has been lost.

As mentioned in an earlier post, it is rather the Naqshbandi practitioners of Silat (including archery) who have preserved the knowledge of actualizing spiritual power within martial arts. The Nafas ar-Rahman is the source of the degrees of reality that correspond to the Arabic letters; if the nafs is disciplined in harmony with these letters, then surely it may be said of such a person: “He who knows his nafs, knows his Lord!”

Washing the mouth in fasting

Question:

Asalam aleikum and may you all recieve endless rewards. I wish to know if it is permisible to swill the mouth out with water (like in the wudu) during a fasting day. I live in a hot country and my mouth becomes very dry during fasting and quite smelly too, I wish to avoid this smell offending others. I have heard it is fine to use a miswak to clean the teeth and sweeten the breath and that swilling the mouth was also ok but I wanted to check and be certain. Thank you for your help and may you all be blessed inshallah. Shukran

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,

It is permissible to swill the mouth with water as long it is not done excessively. It is permissible to brush one’s teeth although makruh in the Shafi`i school if done after Dhuhr time. The Shafi`i ruling is based on the hadith in which Allah’s Apostle (s) said, “fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relations with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, ‘I am fasting.” The Prophet added, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), ‘He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times.”

(Sahih Bukhari Chapter No: 31, Fasting Hadith No 118)

Allah knows best.
