Dream of saying ALIF LAAM MEEM

Question:

In dream I saw myself in market seeing clothe which are in bigger size for me.. after that I saw my frnd with another freind and she put her hand on my head and strt reciting surah Yaseen first three verses when I listen to her I also recited three verses

Answer:

It means you have oversized your religious practice. Seek instead to find a waliullah (‘friend’ in the dream) who will guide you to the core essentials that have extreme value, just as Yasin, being the ‘heart of the Quran’, grants the reciter immense rewards. Allah knows best.

diabetes and fasting

Question:

Salaams,
My 16 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with diabetes type 2. She tried to repay a Ramadan fast yesterday and her sugar level dropped drastically.- broke fast. She still has 4 more to repay. What to do for repayment and next Ramadan?

Answer:

See Fiqh of Ramadan:

Old people, men and women, in late years of life for whom fasting is harmful and difficult, can break the prescribed fast, but are required to give a substitute by feeding a needy person for each prescribed fast day omitted.

The same is true of a sick person who does not hope to recover during the whole year. The schools concur upon this rule excepting the Hanbalis, who say that giving a substitute is recommended and not obligatory.

Ijma’ of tarteeb of the Companions in virtue

Question:

Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah Sheikh Gibril,

Hope you and the family are well and healthy.

Imam an-Nawawi (in Sharh Sahih Muslim) and Mulla Ali al-Qari (Mirqat al-Mafatih) attribute the following saying to Abu Mansur al-Baghdadi whereas Imam Laqqani (Hidayat al-Murid) and Imam Yusuf an-Nabahani (Shawahid al-Haq fil-istighatha bi-sayyid al-khalq) attribute it to Abu Mansur al-Maturidi.

Translation:

Abu Mansur al-Baghdadi said, “our companions are in agreement that the best of them [the Companions] were the four khalifs, on the mentioned order, then the remainder of the Ten [given glad tidings of Paradise], then the Companions of the Battle of Badr, then the Companions of the Battle of Uhud, then those who took the Accepted Pledge of Allegiance [Baya`t ar-Ridwaan], then preference is given to the those who pledged allegiance at `Aqaba on two occasions, as well as the forerunners [the first to accept Islam, as mentioned in the Quran 9:100].

Some questions I had were:
– To which Abu Mansur should this saying be attributed?
– Does “our companions” refer to the Shafi’i school or Ash’ari school?
– If there is ijma‘ (consensus) on the tarteeb (order) of the Companions in virtue, what would be the ruling to believe otherwise?

Wassalaam,

Answer:

Waalaykumussalam warahmatullah,

May this find you and yours well.

They are not mutually exclusive and could have both said it, except that al-Maturidi would not say “our companions”. The latter, in `Abd al-Qahir’s mouth, would mean the Ash`aris and/or Shafiis. Nevertheless, the writings of these two authorities would need to be checked directly as they are all available, and there is no excuse for merely citing them from late secondary sources if one is doing a tahqiq of the mas’ala; to which should be added the many other authoritative representatives of the two doctrinal schools. Note: “Laqani” (no tashdid).

Yes, such ijma` has been stated by several authorities, even if it comes later than the Sahaba and Tabi`in generations. To believe otherwise is a classic innovation of Shi`ism, or Kharijism, and mukabara.

Wassalam,

Hajj Gibril

Sacrificing white cow/bull and mother lookalike

Question:

My mom was helping me sacrifice a white cow/bull by holding its neck. The animal was very calm. I sacrificed it with a kitchen knife.
Mom took me to dad, and both held down a woman who looked like mom. I sacrificed the woman with a sword. She was calm.

Answer:

An anguished dream pointing to the women of your family carrying the burden of livelihood at great cost to the family despite outward agreement, and with increased intensity, guilt and helplessness. If it is the case, seek help.
