Understanding Suluk

Question:

Assalamu’alaikum wr wb. Shaikh Gabriel Fuad Hadad

Shaikh thanks for the email reply from you, we will try to persevere with patience and keep our love for Maulana Sheikh Nadzim al Haqqani, and to Maulana Sheikh Hisham. There’s something I want to say to you:

1. jamaa actually there are still some who smoke even though doing furtively, and I also give a copy of the shuhba Maulana shaykh Nadzim and from Maulana Shaykh Hisham about the consequences of smoking, and your answers in the eshaykh.com about smoking. Please pray for them yaa Sayidi so that they could quit smoking? Whether there is prayer that they should read in order to quit from smoking addiction?

2. I’ve learned to a teacher, namely Al Habib Anis bin Alwy bin Ali bin Muhammad

ibn husein Alhabsy (SOLO), you’veseen his photo when at Habib Novel’s house. Habib Anis never mentioned to me and so far I do not understand the meaning: “people who in life had never met anyone who Sholih, the prayer for life in the world will not be accepted”,perhaps you can explain to me yaa shaykh?

3. About suluk, please explain to us about suluk? In Indonesia suluk done anywhere? What about us who have never participated suluk?

4. How kaifiyah to do wazifah? About time, how to read, how to sit?

Thank you very much for your attention Shaikh.

jazakumulloh khoiron katsiron,

wassalamu’alaikum wr. wb.

Answer:

Wa `alaykum as-Salam,

`Ulema and Awliya have said that cigarette smoking is the same as holding a piece of fire in one’s mouth, so it is good for Muslim smokers who are trying to quit to say:

“Rabbana innana amanna fa-ghfir lana dhunubana wa-qina `adhaba al-nar”. Surat Aal `Imran (3:16)

Regarding the saying you heard from Habib Anis, the best explanation insha-Allah would be from Habib Nawfal Aydrus himself because he was a direct student of Habib Anis.

The first step of suluk is to love and believe in the Shaykh and be with him when he comes to one’s area, to attend his majlis, support him and help him and those around him. If not able then follow him from a distance, know where he is and what he does, and in any case listen to his advice and practice what he advises. Then the Shaykh himself will direct the Murid to the next steps.

The kayfiyya of wazifa is to recite it with sincerity (ikhlas) and truthfulness (sidq), if possible sitting toward qibla with wudu‘ in a clean masjid area at home before fajr or any time, or if not then anywhere even while travelling.

Hajj Gibril Haddad
