Covering for women at home

Question:

Asalaamualaykum respected and knowledgeable eshaykh staff.. May Allah give you more knowledge! Please forgive any disrespect on my behalf..

I wanted clarification on two matters:
1. Is it wajib for a woman to cover her sattarr at home (excluding non-mahrams)? Many people hold the view that it is necessary for her to cover fully, even if she is in a dark room on her own..
2. Is a woman allowed to remove hair from her body while she is menstruating?

May Allah Reward You Abundantly!

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

1. It is necessary (wajib, and recommended according to another opinion) in the Hanafi School, to cover one’s minimum nakedness (between the navel and knee for both men and women) even when alone. The exception to this is when there is a need, such as taking a shower, relieving oneself, or changing one’s clothes. Even in such situations, it is recommended to minimize the exposure. Therefore, it is not neccesary for a woman to cover fully when she is alone.
2. We could not find any reason that would forbid a woman to remove hair from her body while she is menstruating.
