Confused about Area of Study

Question:

786

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatahu,
Sorry for this question, and the lack of adab. But I’m now in a situation that I don’t know what I’ve to choose for profession. I studed nursing, first year, however the first day I had class it didn’t feel right. My mind wants to ran, and never come back to school. Now I feel lost, I don’t know what to choose. First of all i want to become pediatrician, but the study medicine has numerus fixus and I didn’t get in. Nowadays I think a lot about my future, and more often I get confused. Maybe it’s better to be a matron, but than I’ve to find a husband. I doubt about studying nurse, pharmacies, chocolatiere or matron.
JazakAllahKhair!

Answer:

Alaykum as-Salam,
Try what you have not yet tried and see if your heart takes to it, but you need to stick with it for more than a day to be sure. in sha Allah your way will become clearer to you with a little more determination. Recite Ya Razzaq x100 daily to that intention.

Title, “Rahmat lil-`aalameen”

Question:

Shaykh XYZ gave a talk stressing the importance of seeking sacred knowledge and then asked for a copy of the Qur’an and when it was handed to him, he turned to a few verses prior to the famous ayah of “wa maa arsalnaaka illaa rahmat lil-`aalameen“, and began to provide commentary.  Upon reaching this famous verse, he said that one should know that this title, “rahmat lil-`aalameen“, is NOT “khaass” for the Prophet, Sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam.  He said that those who are familiar with advanced grammar, such as books like mukhtasar al-ma`aani, will know this to be true.

I wish to ask you of your wise opinion on this isolated commentary of this famous and most beautiful verse.  Is it correct for one to say that such an appellation is not khaass for the Prophet (Sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam)

barakAllahu feekum

Answer:

He is correct in two senses:

(i) Grammatically rahmatan as a maf`ul li-ajlih (out of mercy) or a hal (as a mercy in yourself) is not phrased as an attribute exclusive to the direct object (the pronoun kaf in arsalnaka, which refers to the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace), but rather as an attribute that is exclusive to the act of sending (arsalnaka), in the sense that “We sent you out of/as a mercy and for no other reason”, even if it can be also rendered as “We sent you to be a mercy and nothing else.” That is the meaning of exclusivity ma… illa (nothing but) in the verse, as opposed to the sense “We sent you and no one else to be a mercy to the worlds.” A confirmation is that Allah Most High said of the Prophet wa-ma arsalnaka illa mubashshiran wa-nadhiran (17:105) but He also said the Prophet Nuh (upon him peace) identified himself as a Nadhir to his people (11:25), and there were others (cf. 34:34, 35:24). Therefore the expression wa-ma arsalnaka illa mubashshiran wa-nadhiran followed by an attribute does not necessitate exclusive restriction of that attribute to the direct object.

(ii) Since the Prophet’s inheritors also receive the attribute of being a mercy to the worlds, they can also be described figuratively or by derivation (taba`an) as rahmatan lil-`alamin such as the major awliya sometimes described as Ghawth al-Anam, al-Ghawth al-A`zam, Qutb, and so forth.

However, at the same time, there is no doubt in the Muslim’s `aqida that the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) is the one and only Rahmatan lil-`alamin in two senses:

(i) He is the only one of the Prophets and Messengers with a universal message that applies to all humanity and even to all other Prophets and Messengers and their communities, i.e. to all mankind from the beginning of creation to the Day of Judgment, and to all jinn as well, including all believers and unbelievers, and to angels as well according to one of two positions, as stated in the Khasa’is Sughra of Imam al-Suyuti. In this sense it is incorrect to say that rahmatan lil-`alamin can apply to someone else as well.

(ii) He is the greatest mercy ever sent.

This is why Ibn Dihya, al-Barizi, al-Suyuti, and others in their books of khasa’is considered Rahmatan lil-`alamin to be among the exclusive attributes (khasa’is) of the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, based not on the grammar of a single verse taken in a vacuum, but based on the whole Qur’an and Sunna, and Allah knows best.

Fiqh Questions

Question:

Asalaamu Alaykum Mawlana Shaykh Hisham and all other members,

I brought a friend to one of the gatherings in London, and he had a few questions which he asked,

1) Are mixed gatherings permissible, (as he said he had seen men and women intermingling in the gathering, i.e. sitting next to one another, and outside the gathering)

2) Didn’t the wudu of the Shaykh break, as in Shafi fiqh the touch of a non mehram women breaks wudu?

3) Is it permissible to listen to women singing in melodious tunes?

JazakAllah Khayr make dua for us all

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

1. Men and women who are not immediately related should not mix nor talk to each other unnecessarily. However, if there is a lack of space it is a matter of necessity for men and women to participate in ibadah, such as Hajj ritual of tawaf and other collective forms of ibadah (worship). In such instances only in a genuine need the conversation between men and women can take place, but in a modest manner.

2. Touching a woman with shahwah (desire) breaks the wudhu.

3. If there is a fear of fitna, the female should not raise her voice and the male should avoid listening to it.

Dream: A big and strong man, zikir

Dream:

A big and strong man thought a zikir. The zikir is Ya sadaqa Ya Allah. Can I proceed to amal the zikir?May I know the meaning of the zikir? What is the meaning of this dream?

Interpretation:

The correct and permissible form is Ya Sadiq Ya Allah. “Sadiq” is included among the Asma’ al-Husna and means “Truthful” whereas sadaqa is completely impermissible since the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) called sadaqa “the filth of people” (awsakh al-nas). In any case the Names of Allah Most High are not taken from dreams or from personal effort but rather from the Qur’an, Sunna and Ijma`.

As for the meaning of the dream Ya sadaqa ya Allah, it may mean O Allah let my sadaqa help me and save me from hellfire. So the first Ya is not a real vocative the way the second Ya is, but rather implies a missing part which can be linguistically interpreted in acceptable ways.

Repentance

Question:

Assalam Aliqum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Baraqatuhu
Sir, I have done alot of sins, minor only.. But i repent then i sin again what should i do. My life is getting destroyed because of my sins please guide me.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2339, narrated by Abu Sa’id:

Allah’s messenger (S) said that the Shaitan said, “By Thy Might, my Lord, I shall continue to lead Thy servants astray as long as their spirits are in their bodies!” The Lord, Who is Great and Glorious, replied, “By My Might, Glory and Exalted station, I shall continue to pardon them as long as they ask My forgiveness!”

Do not underestimate the smallest sins (dharrah) and keep trying to stay away from them as they will all be presented on the Day of Judgement.

Identifying shaytan in visions

Question:

As shaytan can take the form of those besides the Prophet(s), how do we have any way to know that a vision was not shaytanic? Plenty of karamat or visions was reported from the earliest periods of Islam, yet how did they know with certainty that this is not the work of shaytan and was a trustable vision or vision which can be acted upon ? In the absence of a way, the default would be skepticism and neutrality. What turns the tide towards the certainty of the vision?

Jazakallah khair

Answer:

Allah Most High promised a Furqan or “Determining Criterion” (8:29, 2:282) for those who fear Him, as there is no room for skepticism in religion but rather it is built on certainty (yaqeen), which has its teachers, namely “the ulema of the hereafter” as defined by Imam Ghazali in the first book of Ihya Ulum al-Din (Book of Knowledge). That is why Allah Most High made it non-negotiable for Muslims that they must “keep the company of those who are truthful” (9:119), namely the Awliya beginning with Abu Bakr and `Umar (Allah be well-pleased with them) and those of their rank in succeeding generations down to our time.

Prayer Request: Intense fear of shirk

Request:

I have a fire in my heart burning my soul that is asking me, “How can I make Dhikrullah without thinking about Him (and so mentally describing Him) and so making hidden Shirk during Salat and Awrad?” I really hate my position. I feel like unable to pray, to mention His Holy Name…and I don’t know what to do…the only way I see is to remember Allah with an absent mind, with no mind, no concentration, nothing…can you help me?
I have no peace because of that. Sometimes i feel as if am about to think badly (shirk) and keep on fearing that i sometimes don’t know i was thinking badly about my lord until i feel my soul burning that i panic and fear Allah almighty more. I cry and cry and hit my head because i love Allah. Have i committed hidden shirk.

Response:

We are asking Mawlana to pray for you. Shaykh Muhammad Hisam Kabbani has already responded to your question. You may read it here.
