The hadith of olive oil

Question:

Asalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu
What is the authenticity of the hadith: Eat the olive oil and apply it , since there is cure for seventy diseases in it, one of them is Leprosy.
JazakumAllah Khair
Also, what are the authentic hadiths relating to the olive/ olive oil?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

The segment “Consume olive oil and use it for ointment” is an authentic hadith related in the Sunan and the Musnad, while the segment “it contains a cure for seventy diseases, among them leprosy” is a forgery as stated by Shaykh Ahmad al-Ghumari in al-Mughir `ala al-Ahadith al-Mawdu`a fil-Jami` al-Saghir.

The Sunnah Location of a Ring

Question:

Assalamu’alaykum ww yaa Shaykh Gibril,

Regarding an article on eshaykh it is said that it is sunnah for men to wear a ring on little finger, however we also see that Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) and Mawlana Shaykh Hisham (q) wear their ring on ring finger. Please share the wisdom.
Thank you, wassalam.

Answer:

`Alaykum salam,

The article you cite mentions two issues. The following reply addresses the second issue only.

Imam al-Nawawi’s statement, “The Muslims agreed that the Sunnah for men is to wear rings on their little fingers” is based on the hadith that, “the Holy Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) wore his ring on the little finger of the left hand” (Sahih Muslim, Sunan al-Nasa’i, Musnad Ahmad etc.). However, this is not meant in exclusive terms but only that whoever does this is following the Sunnah.

As for wearing the ring on the fourth finger (of either hand), there is a difference of opinion, for and against.

Shaykh `Abd Allah al-Lahji in Muntaha al-Sul (1:547), his large commentary on al-Nabhani’s Wasa’il al-Wusul ila Shama’il al-Rasul, said, “there is no hadith whatsoever mentioning the fourth finger, whether narrated from the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) or from one of the Companions… therefore the Sunnah is to wear it on the little finger.”

However, the claim that there is no such hadith is incorrect in light of the following:

(i) The hadith of Sayyidina `Ali (Allah ennoble his face), “The Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) forbade me from wearing a ring on this finger and this finger,” and he pointed to the index and the middle finger (Sahih Muslim). This shows that the thumb, fourth, and fifth fingers are permissible;

(ii) The hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash`ari (Allah be well-pleased with him): “The Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) saw me switching my ring from my index finger to my middle finger and said: “Wearing a ring is only for this finger and this finger,” and he pointed to the little finger (khinsir) and the fourth finger (binsir) (Musnad al-Ruyani 1:324 §490). This confirms the previous hadith for the fourth and fifth fingers, excluding the thumb.

Hence the correct position is that of Shaykh Sulayman al-Jamal in his commentary on al-Tirmidhi’s Shama’il where he said, “the Sunnah is being followed as long as the ring is on one of the last two fingers of the hand” as we already mentioned here.

Swallowing saliva in prayer?

Question:

Salam,

1. Apa hukum menelan air liur ketika shalat mengikut dalam mazhab syafie’?
2. Jika air liur itu sedikit atau banyak bagaimana?
3. Bagaimana jika air liur itu bercampur dengan benda asing, saperti darah dari gusi atau gigi, atau sisa makanan yang terselit pada gigi?.

Salam, Terima kasih

Translation:

salam,

1. What is the law of swallowing saliva during salat according to Shafi’i Madhhab?
2. How about if it was only a litle and how about if it was a lot?
3. How about if that saliva was mixed with other thing, such as blood from gums or teeth or some food that was stuck/left between the teeth.
thank you wassalam,

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

The Salat is valid if one swallows saliva as long as the latter has not exited the mouth before it is swallowed, even if a lot; if mixed with blood it invalidates Salat because it is impure, as for food swallowed unintentionally it is OK if a small amount.

The Reliance of the Traveller states:
“The prayer is invalidated when any (even if a little) substance (other than saliva) reaches the body cavity intentionally. It also invalidates the prayer if it occurs absentmindedly or in ignorance of its prohibition, provided the amount of the substance is commonly acknowledge to be much (*), though not if it is little.
(*) “In rulings of Sacred Law, the application of key descriptive terms like little, much, near, far, briefly, at length, and so forth, is governed by the concept of common acknowledgement (`urf). To know whether something is little or much, which could be stipulations in a particular ruling, we stop to reflect whether it is commonly acknowledged as such, namely, whether most people would describe it as such when speaking about it. Common acknowledgement also takes into consideration what is normal or expected under the circumstances. For example, a few drops of animal blood on the clothes of a butcher would be little, while the same amount on the clothes of a student would be much.”

How should be non-Muslims dealt?

Question:

Assalam u alayekum !
From verse 33 and 13 of al maeda we have two different ways to deal with disbelievers. Similarly in sura e tauba particularly, Momineen are ordered to take a hardline approach against disbelievers. In more than one place in Quran, it is said that don’t befriend disbelievers but it is also said that call them towards your way (Islam) with wisdom, which is not possible without getting close culturally and socially to those disbelievers/non-Muslims. I have feared many a times that don’t say salam to any non-Muslim and even if he says salam to you, you may say wa alayekum only implying this on greetings of each culture/language, I think it would create a hatred and repulsion in the hearts of disbelievers towards Islam. All these things make me confused.
Please explain that what should be our behaviour with disbelievers?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Some understood the Prophetic prohibition to be one of preference and said you may give salam to a non-Muslim according to several major Companions such as Ibn `Abbas, Abu Umam al-Bahili and Ibn Muhayriz, Allah be well-pleased with them, as mentioned by Imam al-Nawawi in Sharh Sahih Muslim (Book of Salam) and he said it is the position of some of the imams of the Shafi`i School which al-Mawardi mentioned, and Allah knows best.

Islam and psychology

Question:

Assalam u alayekum !
I have two questions from Sura e Maeda.
1-Allah forbade to seek the luck by means of arrows. These days certain ways are used to make a choice. These ways imply the power of sub-concious and psychology. Drowsing and pendulum hypnosis are two prominent such ways. Is it permissible to do so or does it fall in the category of this order (of seeking luck with arrows)? Or is it valid when used for oneself only?
2- Earlier this year I had read a post in which one of shuyukh said that only permissible marriage in Islam is with Muslim women (if I’m not wrong) but doesn’t verse 5 of al maeda allows us to marry women of People of Book (please consider the fact that even at that time People of Book used to commit polytheism and they continue to do it even today.)

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Dredging the subconscious is not from the Sunnah and bad surprises may be expected there, as one is left vulnerable. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (Allah sanctify his soul) always advised people in psychology and psychiatry to switch to another field. As for the other question see:
