Wudu’ and ibn `Abbas

Question:

as-salamu `alaykum Dear Sayyidi Shaykh Gibril,

I  was at my local masjid and heard a discussion between two brothers regarding the ruling of touching the Qur’an without wudu‘. One of them said that the famous hadith stating that no one should touch the Qur’an except the purified, is weak. I believe he was referring to the one containing `Amr bin Hazm. I wanted to ask if this was true? I thought this narration was in the Muwatta’ and ibn Hibban’s sahih, so I was somewhat surprised to hear him say that it was weak. Secondly, he stated that although many companions held the opinion that one cannot touch the Qur’an in a state of minor ritual impurity, it was none other than ibn `Abbas (radiyaAllahu `anhu) who held otherwise. Have you come across this position of ibn `Abbas before?

barakAllahu feekum

Answer:

`Alaykum as-Salam:

The mursal report from Muhammad b. `Amr b. Hazm “None touches the Qur’an except in a state of purity” was included in the Muwatta’, validated by the Four Imams, and declared confirmed and strong by al-Bayhaqi, Ibn `Abd al-Barr, Ibn Kathir and others. Imam Ahmad used as his proof the version of Ibn `Umar which actually has “mushaf” instead of “Qur’an.”

It is well-known from Ibn `Abbas that he would recite his wird of the Qur’an even in a state of janaba. As for reciting even in janaba, it was held to be permissible by Malik, al-Shafi`i in the Old Madhhab, al-Bukhari, al-Tabari, Ibn al-Mundhir and others: Fath al-Bari (Hayd, taqdi al-ha’id al-manasik…).

As for following the presumed fatwa of Ibn `Abbas in touching, then they should by the same token follow his fatwa that tahara is not a prerequisite of validity of salat but no one follows that! In this context Qadi `Iyad mentioned in Tartib al-Madarik (chapter on Malik) the riwaya of the Caliph al-Mansur’s advice to Imam Malik to “avoid the overly strict positions (`aza’im) of Ibn `Umar, the overly lenient positions (rukhas) of Ibn `Abbas, and the singularities/unique positions (shawadhdh) of Ibn Mas`ud; but keep to the best/middle matters and what mustered the consensus of the imams and the Companions.”

Halal Income

Question:

salaam,

I would like to know is working for a gambling company such as Camelot the national lottery haram?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Any person selling items for use in gambling which includes lottery is committing a sin. Even if you just work for the company that sells lottery tickets you are part of the system enhancing haram. There is a rule in Islamic law: “What leads to haram is haram.”

Khatirah

Question:

I was driving saw trees, and thinking how they grow and develop, and it occurred to me that these beautiful trees Allah created …He sends light upon them and absorb the water that Allah sends as rahmat… rain. Through photosynthesis they grow and make chlorophyll and develop.

These are two interesting reagents, light and water, and strong spiritual reagents. Light from Allah through the Prophet (s) and water we drink and use for wudu and so on. Is there similar process like photosynthesis, there must be one and what is the process like?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Congratulations that is a good tafsir. Yes this is not inspiration but beautiful thought that come to the mind. This is called in Arabic, khatirah. These are thoughts which are coming from the hearts of awliyaullah and from the Prophet (s) to your heart. Khatarat, are beautiful thoughts which come about from some experience in front of you.

Your interpretation is correct. The light comes and then there is a process where that light can energize depending on the disposition of the self at the moment. If the disposition is worldly, dunyawi, then that energize light will be used in dunyawi, worldly, direction. If the self is oriented to akhira, that light will be energizing that akhira direction.

The  reaction with the body is what is  important. There is a reaction and from one to another it will change.

Dream: Shaykh Nazim

Dream:

The first time I came upon Sufism was when I was studying it as part of my a-level program. Eventually, I found my way to the Naqshbandi-Haqqani website and after having thought very carefully for months, I decided to initiate into the Haqqani-Naqshbandi Order through the Internet. While taking bayah, I had this very very subtle spiritual feeling.

That night, I had a vision of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, I saw him along with a man who I later identified as Shaykh Hisham coming to my house on car. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim was inside the car. They were going somewhere, they didnt come inside the house (or maybe they did and they were leaving. I don’t properly remember.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim was seated inside the black car, in the front right seat. I asked for permission and then kissed his hands and feet. That’s where the dream ended.

Interpretation:

Audhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim
Bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm:

Wa `alaykumu s-salāmu wa rahmatu l-lāhi wa barakātuh,
This dream is a true dream giving you the good tiding that your baya has been accepted by Mawlana Shaykh Nazim in the most distinguished Naqshbandi Way, and Allah knows best.

Dream: Seeing prophet Muhammad Sallalahoualayhiwasallam

Dream:

Asalaam ula Kum, I had a dream that I saw Sayyidina Muhammad Sallalahoualayhiwasallim, however I just saw their blessed forehead and their eyebrows. Their eyebrows were arched and not long before this dream,  a few weeks before I dreamt of seeing Prophet Adam alayhisallam. I could see that he had very distinct eyebrows of a perfect shape,  the same as Prophet Muhammad Sallalahoualayhiwassalims eyebrows.

Interpretation:

a`udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajeem
Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem:

wa `alaykum salam,
MashaAllah very good tidings. It shows you are in a good condition and faith, following the Sunnah of the Prophet (s),  and Allah knows best.

Declawing a Cat

Question:

Asalaamu Alaikum,

I own a cat that was once abandoned. About a year ago, I got her from an animal shelter. She is a very loving, sweet and affectionate cat in so many ways. I love her tremendously. But unfortunately, she “spooks” easily and then she is likely to scratch quite violently. She has hurt me a couple of times. Some vets recommend declawing — it is not a particularly painful procedure they say. But I’m afraid that might be an injustice or oppression to the cat. Afterall, claws are an essential element to the nature of the cat. What should I do?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

In Islam, the punishment for torturing cats is severe. Our faith holds a special place for cats. To mistreat a cat is seen as a sin:

Al-Bukhari reported a hadith regarding a woman who locked up a cat, preventing it to feed itself. The Messenger of Allah (s) said that her punishment on the Day of Judgment will be torture and Hell.

Is Pension Allowed?

Question:

As-Salaam Alaikum Sheikh!

I’m sending you this question on behalf of my grandmother. The question is:

I’m a widowed house-wife, I’m blessed with three children, two daughters and one son. My husband was working in railways department back home in India. He passed away two years ago, I heard people saying that pension is haraam as it is coming through bank, so is that true? In that case how are we widowed women supposed to live if we dont have money? Even if we have our sons who can earn and give us but what about those women who have only daughters and no son? How are they supposed to live their life?

So my question is, is pension halaal? I’ll be glad if you could clear my doubt as soon as possible.

JazakaAllah Khair
