Delayed Ghusl after Intercourse

Question:

Assalamualaikum!

I’d like to know the ruling on delaying ghusl after the intercourse. This happens rarely when I am extremely busy and I miss prayer times because of this. I am a mother of two kids and I live with my mom-in-law who is not well most of the time. So, the delay. Jazakallah Khair in advance!

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

We find in the books of Fiqh that in case of janabah the ghusl is not to be delayed until the sun is risen but can be delayed only until after dawn has broken. The Fajr (as well as any other regular daily prayer) is not to be missed. We know for sure that in case of men’s janabah they should hasten to do ghusl so that they can offer Fajr in the Jama’at (in the masjid).

Dream: Graveyard

Dream:

Asalmualykum,

My brother had a dream that we were in the graveyard and our car got stuck in the grave and we hit the dead body inside. My father got out and told us to read some Quranic verses. My brother turned to me and asked me that ‘ does the body feel any pain?’ I replied, ‘ No it doesn’t feel any pain’. Please could you interpret this dream?

jazakalah khair, wasalamualykum.

Interpretation:

Bismi’llahi’r’Rahmani’r’Raheem.

wa `alaykum salam,
Hitting the grave and the dead body could mean back biting, your father
is trying to correct you with the verses from the Qur’an.

And Allah knows best.

Statement of Bayazid Bistami (ra)

Question:

Bayazid Bistami is reported to have said, “The sunna is abandoning this world, and religious obligation (al-farida) is companionship with the Master (the Prophet)” [Sulami, Tabaqat al-Sufiyya]

Could you please shed some light on this statement, specifically the last part about religious obligation being “companionship with the Master”?

Answer:

It is a definition of “Fard and Sunna” for the Prophets and Awliya as opposed to the jurists and the scholars of external knowledge. The correct translation is:

“Abu Yazid was asked about [defining] the Sunna and the Farida [Fard]. He replied: “The Sunna is abandoning this world and the Fard is to keep company (suhba) with the Lord Most High (al-Mawla), because the whole Sunna points to abandoning the world, and the whole Book points to keeping company with the Lord Most High. Therefore, whoever learns the Sunna and the Farida becomes perfect.”

Allah knows best regarding the sayings of His Friends but it is well-known that Abu Yazid and so many of the great Awliya disliked questions about legal rulings and legal principles. They considered it inappropriate to ask Knowers of Allah to discuss rulings of the Law rather than asking them to describe Allah Himself. They understood their mission as pointing to Allah, not to the rulings of Allah, which they left to the ulema. This is the whole point of Imam Ghazali in the first book of Ihya’ `Ulum al-Din: Knowledge (`ilm) in the fullest sense of the word is knowledge of yaqin in Ghayb and Akhira, i.e. haqiqa and ma`rifa; not just shari`a knowledge of do’s and don’ts — which is limited to dunya. (Ghazali added: Don’t be upset with me dear reader if I say this!)

So Abu Yazid always rephrased and reformed everything to point to Allah Most High and insisted spiritual knowledge of states and stations is all “about Him, by Him, in Him, through Him, from Him and to Him….”

This advanced definition is in keeping with this method. It is for the Knowers of Allah and turns juristic definitions on their head in keeping with Sayyidina Abu Yazid’s other statements such as: “The minimum required from the Knower of Allah is that he must give away everything he possesses” “They reached gnosis by losing what they possess and standing with what He owns.” I.e. the madhhab of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq which is that zakat is 100% as opposed to 2.5% for the rest of the Umma. It is as if he is saying “the fard is to worship Allah as if you see Him, which is what the Qur’an is all about, and its minimum preparation is the Sunna, which is all about abandoning everything that is other than Allah. Joining the two is perfection.”

The latter expression, “he has become perfect” (fa-qad kamula) is a veiled reference to the Prophetic Hadith “Among men many have reached perfection” and alludes to the Awliya, who are the key to such knowledge and practice of Sunna and Fard. Ibn `Ajiba said in his Tafsir under the verse There has come to you a Light and a Manifest Book (5:15):

“Spiritual allusion (ishara): the walī is a light from the light of Allah and a secret from among His secrets, by which He brings out those for whom Divine help is foreordained out of the dark layers of veiling and into the light of Witnessing, and by which He guides those whom He selected for His Presence on the path of arrival to Him. Success is by Allah!”

There is extreme concision in Abu Yazid’s statement and also spiritual inspiration illustrating al-Nawawi’s description (in Bustan al-`Arifin) of Abu Yazid’s sayings as almost matching Prophetic Hadith in their beauty, and they deserve takbir and tahlil because they seem to throw open the gates of Paradise before our eyes.

Note: In his Futuwwa, another book by al-Sulami, he defines futuwwa as “Suhba with Allah, Suhba with the Messenger of Allah, and Suhba with the Awliya of Allah.”

May Allah Most High sanctify their souls and raise them higher and higher. May He forgive us for the honor of His Beloved Prophet and Awliya.

Long Distance Marriage

Question:

Salamu alaykum ya sheikh,
I am from Europe in 2007 i made hidjrah (relocate) to UAE all alone and in my hidjrah I married with (x). In the beginning everything was fine. We went together to Umrah and everything alhamdulilah. After a while he told me he wants to relocate to Europe (he is Syrian citizen) but in the beginning of our marriage he told me we are staying in UAE for our  deen and Islam. I am now back alone in Europe and now I visit him only one time a year because I can not make any visa or iqama. He also don’t want me to return back to UAE because if crisis and no job. What should i do ? What dua ?

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,
If there is no cohabitation for 4 months or more, the marriage is dissolved unless there is mutual agreement in case of emergency such as hospital or jail confinement. Otherwise when the fundamental condition of marriage disappears then there is no marriage anymore. If he intends for this marriage to continue then the living arrangement or visits have to be more frequent. Of course all this is assuming he also gives you living expenses, without which the same result applies. You may speak with him and makes things clear, because for sure no Syrian wife would put up with this.

Recite ya Fattah ya Karim x100 daily and be patient with your worship, in sha Allah it will improve.

Prayer Request: For an Orphan

Request:

Salâm aleykum, wa rahmatullah, wa barakatuh,

Dear Sheykhs,
I have a female friend who is an orphan. Her Uncle is her guardian, he married her to a man who was very bad, he hit her. She is divorced, but now her violent Uncle wants to force her into marriage again. She is very heartbroken plus she has a bad cyst in her head which is caused by her sorrow and stress, so I strongly think. I want to help her, but she is very hurt and fearful and always retreats because of that.

Please pray for her well-being and that justice may be done, so much injustice has happened to her it breaks my heart thinking about it. Allah wants me to help her, I feel it deep in my heart, I need much strength now.

Please pray for her, honored Sheykhs.

Ma’a salâmah.

Response:

wa `alaykum salam,

Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) always worried about the orphans and ordered to protect them and not to make them feel lonely. The Noble Qur’an mentions the orphan 23 times to show how important it is to take care of them as the Prophet did.

Dream: Mother, Heart Attack

Dream:

I had a dream that my mother (who is still alive) was having a heart attack or stroke on the janamaz whilst reading namaz or after namaz and I was holding her trying to save her. I was calling for my brothers and no one came at the the right time. When one of my brothers finally appeared, my mum was okay again and had recovered from her attack. Then my brother shouted at me saying why did you create a racket for when everything was alright however my mum was having an attack on the floor and I was holding her in my arms crying.

Interpretation:

Bismi’llahi’r’Rahmani’r’Raheem.

Your Mother want’s you and your brother to not skip namaz or to take it lightly or she would hurt in her heart.

And Allah knows best.

Title of “Mawlana”

Question:

Assalamo-Alaikum,

With due respect, What do you say about the following information:

“No country uses “Maulana” title: The mullahs have adopted for themselves the honorific title of “Maulana” (which means OUR protector, OUR lord, OUR master) – which has the most serious un-Islamic connotation of placing another WITH the Almighty (SHIRK).

The word “maulana” is a compound word – MAULA and NA (our) which, under strict Islamic philosophy is applicable to God ALONE!

The word is used only twice in the Holy Quran, and refers to Allah Subhaanahoo Wa Ta’aala, indicating that it can be referred only to Him and NO ONE ELSE!

(1) “Rabana…anta MAULANA fansoorna alal qaumil Kaafireen – Our Lord…You are our Protector/ Lord/ Master, so grant us victory over the unbelievers” (2:286).

(2) “Huwa MAULANA; wa alal Laahi fal yatawakkalil Mu’minoon – He (Allah) is our Protector/ Lord/ Master, And on Allah let the Believers rely” (9:51). ”

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,

I am not aware of anyone who is known for Islamic knowledge who ever said that the title “Mawlana” connotes shirk when used for other than Allah, or used the Qur’an to make such a claim. The Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) warned very strenuously against interpreting Qur’an according to one’s own opinion (ra’y) so we have to be very careful concerning statements about linguistic, doctrinal, or legal positions inferred from Qur’an which are unheard of.

It is well-established that when `Ali b. Abi Talib, Ja`far b. Abi Talib, and Zayd b. Haritha argued over which of them had the greatest right to raise the daughter of Hamza b. `Abd al-Muttalib, the Holy Prophet (upon him and all of them blessings and peace) addressed each of them with words of assuagement and honor which made them feel happy, at which time he said to Zayd: “You are our mawla and our brother (anta MAWLANA wa-akhuna).”

Narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad, Ibn Abi Shayba, al-Nasa’i, Abu Ya`la, al-Tahawi, al-Hakim, al-Bayhaqi and others.

Moreover the Holy Prophet in a mass-transmitted hadith has named himself the mawla of the believers, and has said Man kuntu mawlahu fa-`Aliyyun mawlah. After which `Umar b. al-Khattab would congratulate `Ali for becoming the Mawla, i.e. patron, of all Muslims.

Therefore whoever claims that the term Mawlana connotes shirk when used for other than Allah, has put himself in the position of imputing shirk to the Messenger of Allah and his closest Companions and he will face them on the Day of Resurrection with what he claimed.

I do not Believe in Divorce but..

Question:

As-salaam alaikom,

My husband is not compatible with me I only married him because both our parents wanted us to marry. I have caught him many times dating other girls. He also does not share anything with me, I am not allowed to know how much money he makes, where he works, who he is talking to, I can’t look at his phone or computer. I am only with him for our baby. Everyone is telling me to leave him but I don’t believe in divorce and my husband knows that I don’t believe in divorce so he is pushing my limit to see how much patience I can give before I divorce him. He secretly wants a divorce but he doesn’t want to divorce me, he wants me to divorce him so he could tell everyone I was the “bad” one. What is the right thing to do?

Answer:

Alaykum salam,

Constantly not cohabiting with you, or not covering your needs, or abusing you are all grounds for divorce especially if you are both in agreement as to incompatibility. However, Allah Most High will create compatibility and love between you with some mutual effort in sha Allah, and a lot of patience and forgiveness. If that is your wish then recite Ya Wadud x100 daily and remind your husband of his everlasting responsibility toward dependents in the eyes of Allah as this is not a game.

Marriage Partner of my Choice

Question:

Salam Ya Shaykh and Eshaykh Staff,

I love a woman whom I wish to marry, but my parents want me to get married to someone else what should I do because I don’t think they will allow me to marry my choice.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

If your parents refuse to give their consent to marry a moral woman and instead seek a corrupt person for you, then you don’t have to follow their course of action. I hope that is not the case. Therefore, seek the blessings of your parents.
