“In order that ye know Allah”?

Question:

May Allah and His Prophet (s) greet you,

Is there any tafsir you are acquainted with about the fragment:

وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُو

that interprets li-ta`arafoo – “in order that ye know Allah”?

Answer:

May Allah, His Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) and all Prophets, Saints and Angels greet you,

Yes, what you said is mentioned by Imam al-Fakhr al-Razi in his Tafsir which is the magnum opus of all classical tafsirs.
It is literally supported by the qira’a (canonical reading) of Ibn `Abbas, Aban from `Asim, Ubay b. Ka`b, al-Dahhak, and Ibn Ya`mur which reads

{li-ta`rifu}
لِتَعْرِفُوا
i.e. as the mudari` form of `arafa, “for you to know” i.e. that the most honorable among you in the Divine sight etc., although it can also be said to have a suppressed direct object (maf`ul bihi mahdhuf), so that it can be glossed as “for you to know” in absolute terms, i.e. “for you to reach gnosis of Allah Most High.” Then the next part is a new statement, “Truly the most honorable among you in the Divine sight” etc.

And Allah knows best.

JAzakAllah khayr

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Discrepancy stems from the fact that there is no single authentic account of their precise names; however, we have named our sources and we have mentioned that they concur with many others. As for the names you gave they differ only in one or two letters or dots, so they are very close.

Dream: Snakes

Dream:

Salaam Sayyidi,

May Allah bless you and all providing this service; and pray you are in the best of iman.

Ya Sayyidi, I dreamt that I answer the door to my house, no one is there – but I feel something on my foot. When I look down more than 3 thin snakes are penetrating my big toe. They move up my left leg and around my body into my right leg. I awoke from the dream before they reached my right foot.

Please pray for me Sayyidi. Jazak Allah

Statement of Ali al-Qari on ilm al-ghayb?

Question:

As-salamu ‘alaykum

Is this statement really from Shaykh Ali al-Qari?

ﻭﺫﻜﺭ ﺍﻟﺤﻨﻔﻴﺔ ﺘﺼﺭﻴﺤﺎ ﺒﺎﻟﺘﻜﻔﻴﺭ ﺒﺎﻋﺘﻘﺎﺩ ﺃﻥ ﺍﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﻴﻌﻠﻡ ﺍﻟﻐﻴﺏ ﻟﻤﻌﺎﺭﻀﺔ ﻗﻭﻟﻪ ﺘﻌﺎﻟﻰ ﻗﻝ ﻻ ﻴﻌﻠﻡ ﻤﻥ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺴﻤﺎﻭﺍﺕ ﻭﺍﻷﺭﺽ ﺍﻟﻐﻴﺏ ﺇﻻ ﺍﷲ

“Know that the Prophets (upon them blessing and peace) do not know the unseen matters (mughayyabat) of things except what Allah has taught them from time to time. The Hanafis have mentioned with clear statements that by believing the Prophet (upon him blessing and peace) knew the unseen one is declared a disbeliever due to conflict with His (Exalted is He) statement: “Say: None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen but Allah.””

[Sharah fiqh al-Akbar, Azeemabadi quoted this in Awn al-Mabood under the hadeeth no: 4240]

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

What you quoted is in line with the position mentioned in some Hanafi works, but al-Qari holds a more open view in his commentary of the Burda, of which I have translated an excerpt posted here:

Circumcision for convert

Question:

Assalâm alaykum,

I have a question that is very important for me. I am a convert to Islam and I want to ask, if it is necessary for converts to be circumcised. It is very important for me, because I was told by a Muslima that without being circumcised I won’t find a Muslim wife, so I worry about my future. I am not afraid to go through such a procedure, but I wouldn’t want to do it if it is not truely necessary. That is why I ask for your advice. I am 19 years old now (for extra information in case it affects the answer).

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur’an:

لَّقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ۬ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلۡأَخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرً۬ا

{Verily in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example for anyone whose hope is in Allah and Last Day, and who engages much in the praise of Allah.} Surat al-Ahzab 33:21

A Hadith related by Bukhari reads: “The practices related to Fitrah (the nature) are five: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the moustache, cutting the nails and removing the hair of the armpits.”

From this point of view, converts are to undergo the operation.

khatm after death

Question:

aslamalaykum

when someone dies my family do a khatm on the 3rd day after the death and then on the 40th day, does mawlana also do this or is this only in pakistani culture and if not what does mawlana do after a family members death
thank you

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Islamically Khatm and the reading of Tahlil should be done on the 3 day, but in some countries due to certain cultures they do it on the 7th, and/or on the 40th day. It is not bad to do so, and it is not a sin if you don’t recite Holy Qur’an on the 40th or 7th day after the death. The requirement is on the 3rd day, but if you do extra it benefits as you are reciting Holy Qur’an on the person’s soul and sending that recitation as a gift to him which Allah(swt) will reward.

Antibiotics

Question:

Assalamu’alaikum dear Maulana Shaikh Hisham,

Since years I`ve got a very weak health. Nearly every cold I had finally to treat with antibiotic.
This year I also got pneumonia and had to go to hospital.
Now I had a tick bite and the doctor ordered me again 3 weeks of antibiotic.

Please, could you recommand a treatment ( dua, prayer, medicine, nutrition, food …?) to stabilize the immune system particulary after antibiotics.
I am now 45 years old and my husband and I are talking about a third child, but we really don’t know, because of my health.
Please pray for us and thank you so much.

Answer:

audhu billah mina ‘sh-shaytani ‘r-rajeem,

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,

wa `alaykum salam,

Ask your doctor regarding any medical treatments.  For any need you have you may recite the following du`a once or seven times daily.  Insha-Allah, you will improve or find something to help you.

Dream: Did I see Prophet (s)?

Dream:

Aslamualaykum.
If one was to feel like he saw a little bit of our Master our Beloved Prophet Muhammad Salalaahu Alaihi Wa Alihi Wa Salim face just his blessed chin and his beard in their Dream but the beard didn’t look too long it was kind of short not sure
if the beard was a fist length… the little bit of his blessed face was on a picture. I am really confused to know if it’s just my imagination or maybe I am wrong. I can’t remember. Please help me, I am really confused. Someone was showing me that picture in my dream. I do not know who they were. I did not really see their face, I can’t remember much, please help me.

Thanks
Forgive me for my lack of adab, May Almighty ALLAH reward you all AMEEN.

Interpretation:

audhu billah mina ‘sh-shaytani ‘r-rajeem,

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,

wa `alaykum salam,

There is no doubt or confusion regarding a dream of the Prophet (s), as it is a true dream.  He may appear in different appearances based on the viewer’s own condition.  This is not your imagination.  Keep salawat/darood and love to the Prophet (s), insha-Allah you will see more later.

When is suicide acceptable?

Question:

I read a few questions on suicide on the website. Whilst I know it is forbidden and there’s a punishment, I want to know under what circumstances is suicide acceptable? What if the person is heavily depressed to such an extent that even medicines don’t work? What if, despite all prayers the person is still in the same state of depression and commits suicide? Is this still considered a sin? Will Allah still punish the person for suicide?

Answer:

Insha-Allah we ask Mawlana Shaykh to pray for you. Haram means forbidden/NOT acceptable. Please find advice from Mawlana and view The Reality Behind Illness video.
