Signs of Last Days: Major & Minor

Question:

Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah,

Sheikh Gibril,

I know that the signs of the Last Day are divided into major and minor however, I’m not sure what the criterion for distinguishing between the minor and major signs is?

JazakumALLAH khairan,
Wa ‘alaikum as-salaam,

Answer:

Alaykum as-Salam,

The criterion is that the major signs are (i) extremely near in time to the Day of Resurrection, (ii) occur in quick succession “like pearls falling off a broken necklace” (hadith in Sunan al-Tirmidhi), possibly even “in the last hour of a single day” (al-Sha`rani, al-Yawaqit wal-Jawahir chapter 65), and (iii) are mostly “khilaf al-`ada” (Abu al-`Abbas al-Qurtubi the teacher of the great mufassir), i.e. what we would call supernatural.

Furthermore those major signs are only 10 and the rest are all “early” or “middle” signs.

Those ten signs as listed by Shaykh Yusuf al-Nabhani in his 100-page abridgment of Sayyid Muhammad b. `Abd al-Rasul al-Barzanji’s 400-page al-Isha`a li-Ashrat al-Sa`a are:

1. The emergence of the Masih al-Dajjal (preceded by that of al-Mahdi, upon him peace)
2. The descent of `Isa (upon him peace)
3. The emergence of Ya’juj and Ma’juj
4. The ruin of Madina which precedes the Day of Resurrection by 40 years.
5. The destruction of the Ka`aba and theft of its adornments
6. The rising of the sun from the West
7. The emergence of the Beast
8. The emergence of the Smoke
9. A sweet wind will seize the lives of all the believers and spare only the unbelievers
10. The Qur’an will be lifted from the books and the hearts.

May Allah grant us and all believers safety here and hereafter.

For MSH regarding eyesight

Question:

Assalam Alaikum beloved Mawlana, I am in need of some heavenly advice regarding the eyesight. I love all your opinions and I would like some advice regarding laser eye surgery, as I am not aware about it. Please can you tell me a natural cure/medicine for making my eyesight better and please pray for me and for my eyesight. Thank you Ya Sayidiee.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Laser surgery to treat a disease is absolutely legitimate, in the sense you use light energy to treat conditions of eye like:

1. glaucoma (to reduce eye pressure and prevent loss of vision)

2.   secondary cataract (to remove the secondary opacification of capsule after cataract surgery,) to remove the blurring and clouding of vision after cataract surgery  ,

3. Diabetic retinopathy (bleeding in retina, the screen of the eyeball)

4. or any other vascular complications in eye, including macular degeneration, vein occlusion etc. in retina.

We are using the tools that Allah has opened for us to help treat diseases of the eyes.

On the other hand, Lasik surgery is used generally to get rid of eyeglasses or contacts (which are not diseases of the eye). It is more of a cosmetic procedure. It changes the structure of the cornea, the clear glassy covering in the eyeball externally). A flap is made in the center like a cookie cutter, and the stromal layer of cornea is thinned out to a precalculated amount, and the flap put back.  Since it changes the structure of the cornea, and the flap breaks the corneal nerve connections, there is a small percentage of risks associated with the surgery ( like with any surgery, including cataract surgery).

The big difference is that it is worth taking the 2 to 5 % risks for a disease of the eye, but probably not on a healthy eye, for cosmetic purposes.  This is a personal decision, like any cosmetic surgery is!

As for as improving eyesight, it depends on what the reason for the decreased vision is. It could be as simple as Dry Eye Syndrome, where there is uneven tear film on the cornea, which is a very common condition affecting 20 to 50 % of people, natural treatment for this is proper sleeping, blinking frequently, using humidifier in dry conditions or using tear drops.

family problems pray for us

Request:

We are going through some trying times. I don’t wish to sound ungrateful, as we are weak servants of Allah (swt). As a mother, it gets unbearable to see your children in difficulties. So a prayer request is made from yourselves for our family and their adversities. I feel aware that they are as a result of our weaknesses. Still we request dua for our guidance and removal of difficulties Inshallah, especially my son, who is incarcerated. Please pray for his freedom and right guidance. May we be so fortunate to visit Maulana, ameen

Response:

wa `alaykum salam,

Shaykh Hisham is praying for you.

Recite daily for your children: 10x rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a`yunin wa ‘j`alna li ‘l-muttaqeena imaman

and for your son in prison,  700x daily: Wa qala al-malik ‘utoonee bihi.

Separation through khula

Question:

Assalam alaikum Ya Sayyidi
Please help me. My husband and I are not staying together for the last 2 years. In fact we are in different countries. The feelings of love or respect for him as a wife have been completely erased from my heart and the relation is totally over from my side. I know he will never give me a talaq so I asked him to divorce me through ‘khula‘ but he is paying no heed. Last year in November, he told me that he would give me a khula by the end of the month but after that he never contacted me.Ya Sayyidi, please tell me what I should do because I want to get separated peacefully. I want to start a new life.

Jazakallah khair

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

I will pray for you and keep asking. Also see a judge as he can take a decision.

Idris

Question:

I Study the history of philosophy and religion and I have a question regarding the Islamic view of the figure identified as Idris in the Quran. I have heard that this is also Enoch of the Christian and Jewish texts who rose to Heaven on a chariot of fire. I have also read that the Sabians identify this figure as Thrice-great Hermes, who set down the Emerald Tablet and the Corpus Hermeticum. Can you elucidate on the Islamic perspective of Idris?

Thank you for this wonderful site, as well as all the other Naqshbandi sites. They are fantastic.

Answer:

786

There is no better source in English for the Islamic history of the Prophet Idris, peace be upon him, than the first volume of Lore of Light by Hajjah Amina Adil, may Allah have mercy on her. As you mention, Idris is also known as Enoch; concerning the prophet raised on the chariot – or rather horse – of fire, that is Elijah, or Ilyas, peace be upon them all. In the Holy Qur’an (XIX, 56), Idris is called a Siddiq; a relationship therefore exists with the Biblical Melchizedek, as well as with the Naqshbandi order that was originally known as the Siddiqiyya.

Since your question also concerns the history of Hermes, some additional remarks should not be out of place. According to Islamic sources, Hermes was known as the “Thrice-great” because his name is connected to three historical figures: Idris in the time before the flood, and in the time after, the Babylonian Hermes who taught Pythagoras and the Egyptian Hermes. “Hermes” may therefore be understood as a title, with its shared use confirming a singular wisdom. As you know from your study of the Corpus Hermeticum, the Classical world recognized in the Egyptian Thoth an identical function to that of Hermes. For an alternative explanation of the three Hermeses, please see my Alchemy in Middle-earth.

The remnants of the wisdom of the Thrice-great Hermes, although pertaining to the priesthood of past nations, has passed into the Christian and Muslim worlds as knowledge pertaining to the intermediary sciences that are rooted in the correspondences between the human microcosm and the greater cosmos. These Hermetic sciences were traditionally understood  both to depend upon and to provide a support for the greater mysteries of religion. It should be noted that the earliest record of the Emerald Tablet – of profound importance to the Christian and Muslim worlds alike –  is to be found in Arabic sources. Also worth mentioning is the identification in Islamic sources of the Great Pyramid as the “tomb of Hermes;” no doubt Shaykh Abd al-Wahid Yahya is correct in affirming that here also is a remnant of the wisdom of Idris, embedded in its very structure and in its proportions, but that this nevertheless remains concealed.

There is an even greater relevance to the role of Idris in the Islamic perspective. Along with Ilyas, Jesus, and al-Khidr – peace be upon them – Idris is one of the ever-living prophets, and so he is understood to have an important function in the spiritual hierarchy. These four are known as the Awtad – literally “Stakes” – who stabilize the world. Moreover, with his position in the Heaven of the Sun of traditional cosmology, Idris acts as the living Pole or axis of the entire cosmos. It is therefore of interest to observe that according to Arabic gematria, the name for the Pole – Qutb – is reckoned numerically as 111. This is in perfect agreement with what was mentioned above, concerning how unity may have a three-fold expression.

Another valuable contribution to the understanding of Idris may be found in a book written by Charles-Andre Gilis which originally bore the remarkable title, Le Coran et la fonction d’Hermes (“The Qur’an and the Function of Hermes”).

Which knowledge to spread?

Question:

Assalamu’Alaikum,

I understand you should not keep knowledge to yourself, but share it as much as you can. But I also understand that when it is something to do with your own relationship with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) awliya keep that to themselves. For example, when I sleep I imagine my head is in the lap of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) in muwajah in Madina Munawarah, which especially helps if I am anxious to make me sleep relaxed. My sister’s friend cannot sleep before exams and I thought of telling my sister to tell her this thing. Even though my name wouldn’t be mentioned to her friend I was hesitant of even telling my sister. I was hesitant because of the knowledge of this practice, and not because I felt the reality of preserving what is between Rasulullah and myself as the mashayikh do. When should I tell and when not?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Since the recommendation is not about you but about the person experiencing nervousness or insomnia, you may share this good medicine.
