Khalid ibn al-Walid saying “Ya Muhammadah”

Question:

As-salam,

A Wahhabi says that the narration about “Ya Muhammadah” being the battle cry of the Muslim armies during the battle at Yamama is extremely weak: http://ahlusunnahwaljamaah.com/2010/10/25/tawassul4/

“At-Tabari mentioned the Isnad of the poem of Khalid ibnul Walid and the saying of Muslims on battle “O Muhammad” in his book “Tarikh Al-Umam Wal Muluk” v 3 p 293 with Isnad: from Shu’ayb from Sayf from Dahak ibn Yarbu’ from his father from a man from Banu Suhyam.

And this Isnad is extremely weak, as it contains Sayd ibn ‘Umar, the author of “Al-Futuh”. Abu Hatim declared him to be Matruk, Ibn Hibban said he is accused of heresy, and ibn ‘Adi said that most of his Ahadith are Munkar. Despite this, there are two other narrators Dahak ibn Yarbu’ and the man from Banu Suhaym are Majhul (unknowen).”

Is this true?

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,

Discussions of Sayf b. `Umar generally show ignorance of the rules of narrator-commendation and discreditation (al-jarh wal-ta`dil) and this objection is no exception.

Furthermore, al-Dahhak b. Yarbu` is not unknown, and the only scholar to weaken him was al-Azdi, whose unconfirmed rulings are considered unreliable due to their unsubstantiated severity; both al-Dahhak and his father are Muslims from the Banu Hanifa — Musaylima’s tribe — and the unnamed Tabi`i was present with Khalid b. Walid, so draw your own conclusions as to why such a researcher as Sayf b. `Umar would consider this report valuable and historic.

Ibn Kathir relies on Sayf a lot in al-Bidaya wal-Nihaya as does Ibn Hajar in the Isaba. The latter said in the Taqrib that Sayf was “weak in hadith but a pillar of reliance (`umda) in history.” Our teacher Dr. Nur al-Din `Itr in his notes on Ibn Rajab’s Sharh `Ilal al-Tirmidhi (2:554-555) includes Sayf in the type of “Those that were declared weak in certain subjects and not others. This applies to those that devoted themselves to a certain discipline then went into other than it, such as, in the qira’at, `Asim… or in history Ibn Ishaq…. and Sayf.” Al-Daraqutni cites him authoritatively in al-Mu’talif wal-Mukhtalif. Al-Dhahabi calls him a “master chronicler” (akhbari `arif). Ibn Hajar rejects Ibn Hibban’s report that Sayf was accused of heresy (zandaqa) and Dr. `Itr points out in his notes on al-Dhahabi’s Mughni that Sayf’s reports point to anything but zandaqa.

That is why al-Tabari retained this report, as did the specialists of history after him in their large works such as al-Maqrizi, Ibn al-Athir and Ibn Kathir, and they did not care about those who weaken it.

Dream: Searching for sunset

Dream:

Asalamu alaykum shuyukh,

In this dream I’m with my siblings and a friend. I’m trying to capture the sunset in a photo but at times there are obstacles in my way and I’m trying to find gaps through the houses and buildings even driving a great distance for the photo. I see all these different colored sunsets, from red, purple, pink and blue. Its really breathtaking. I’m in a deserted place with somewhat dry grass and I’m driving in between the cars.

Interpretation:

Walaikumas salam
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Insha Allah this dream is indicating that you will be blessed with a good marriage and beautiful children. It will seem there are many obstacles, but there is really only one obstacle and that is you are only using your mind when looking, only looking for the external qualities but not the inner qualities or character. Therefore, look using your heart for a husband with kind manners, generous mind, God-fearing heart.

Non-Islamic pension plan in India

Question:

May Allah grant long live to MSN & MSH.

I am 30 yrs old & work in a private company in India. I have done a pension plan by my own choice (not compulsory by my company) and it is non-Islamic so as to save from tax deductions and savings for my old age. Is it halal?? If not then can I continue the policy with the intention of tax saving and separating the interest money (doing sadaqa) and halal money (for my use).

Answer:

If a Sharia-compliant pension plan is not available in India and you indicated that your current plan is not in line with Sharia standards (money may be invested in haram things), then the only option left for you is to do as you proposed in your question.

Dream: Obsession over a girl

Dream:

I was studying away from home and I saw the girl come to study with me as well. I was helping her with her luggage and I told her to come stay with me and we could study together. I saw her parents at the airport and they were looking upon us favorably. Skipping forward I saw that we were married and we had two beautiful looking teenage daughters. I don’t know her in real life that much and we only know each other as peers in a class we had over 2 years ago. She is also non-Muslim and Caucasian. I have seen her in similar dreams in the past as well. The weird thing is that my parents have already found a girl they like for me in Pakistan but they say if I like her then they will go ahead. Is this a good augury or bad?

Interpretation:

Walaikum salam
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Say Auzubillahiminas shaytanir rajeem and Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem and three times darood shareef and then tell the dream to your parents and consult with them. In your culture it is very difficult to marry without the blessing and consent of your parents. Tell them upfront since nothing has happened yet. Use practical sense and Islamic adab for selecting your spouse. This dream does not have any direction except that it informs you of a possibility. Anyway whatever Allah has written in your destiny only that will take place. Have trust in Allah and pursue the one you like but with the consent of your parents.

Asking Forgiveness for Intimacy

Question:

Assalaamualaikum!

I went with a guy to his house three times when his family was away and without the knowledge of my own family. We kissed and I removed my shirt for him and he sucked and licked my breasts, but I kept my pants on and we did not have any sexual intercourse. We just got intimate to this extent and nothing more.

I am now regretful of all of this and want to repent sincerely to Allah. Will this be considered as committing adultery? How do I ask for Allah’s forgiveness?

Jazak Allahu Khair!

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

InshaAllah, please see the Post “Best Dua of Repentance“.

Wearing Taweez

Question:

Salam

I had a couple questions regarding taweez. I have heard from numerous people that wearing taweez is considered Shirk and that the verses of the Quran should not be worn. Although the taweez consists of Quranic Verses, only Allah can protect you from any harm. I also heard a story that a man came to the Prophet Mohammed (S) and wore something around his neck similar to a taweez, and the Prophet Mohammed (S) ripped it off his neck telling him not to wear such things. Under what circumstances should people wear a taweez, if it should be worn at all?

Shukran

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Please refer to this post.

Understanding Allah (SWT)

Question:

I was wondering if the word Allah is Arabic for God or if it is actually His name? I keep getting mixed answers. The jews call Him Elohim, so I assume the word Allah is Arabic for God? Please help me, it keeps bothering me when I don’t know.

Answer:

Assalamu alaikum,

Yes, the word Allah is Arabic for God and that is why pre-Islamic Muslims used that word as well. You probably remember that the Prophet’s own father was known as Abd-Allah, or Abdullah, so it was a common name by which God was known to the Arabis. Another way of looking at is also that Christians in the Middle East also refer to God as Allah.

That being said, we also say that the name Allah is one that Allah Himself chose for us to refer to Him. He chose Muhammad (pbuh), an Arab man, to be the final Messenger and for the Quran to be revealed in Arabic.

So in a way it is both Arabic for God, but it is also a name chosen by Allah to be used by the nation of Muhammad (pbuh), the seal of Prophets, the nation of the Last Days.

And Allah and His Prophet know better.
