Concubinage in Islam

Question:

Asalamualaikum,

I am a History student and I have a particular interest in the history of the Islamic world, particularly Ottoman history. The Ottoman sultans all had many lawfully married wives, but also kept many ‘concubines’ in their household ,who were simply there for the sultan’s sexual pleasure and general entertainment. The Ottoman sultan would have hundreds of concubines sometimes over his lifetime, as well as his legal wives, and the justification often given is that the slave girls were ‘ma malakat iymanihum‘ ,referred to many times in the Qur’an. However, this has always not sat completely comfortably with me (either rightfully or wrongly) and I want to know if these actions of the Ottoman sultans ,and other Muslim rulers in fact, are truly justifiable from an Islamic perspective. Inshallah I hope you can clarify this for me.

Answer:

Wa `alaykum salam,

The concubinage structure was a way to save war captives from destitute widowhood and orphanhood through a palatial life that also provided a form of education and many of those concubines ended up emancipated and in lawful marriages. The Ottoman Sultans had other things on their minds than pleasure and entertainment even if they were men, not angels. There were pragmatic social and political dynamics at play and not just the Western fantasy of a sexual harem a la Delacroix.

Divorce and marriage to convert

Question:

slm,
An old friend came to my home and asked two questions he was posed:
1) A husband has not contacted his wife and children for more than two years now. His location is unknown. The wife is asking is her marriage still valid?
2) What is the opinion if a man wants to accept Islam only to be able to marry a Muslim lady?
wslm,

Thank you very much to all the staff/scholars at e-shaykh for your services. May Allah swt cover you with His mercy. Many salaams to all especially Mawlana Shaykh Hishaam (qs).

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

1. If the husband is away from his wife for more than 6 months and she did not agree to that, then the wife may file for divorce.

2. In that case she can marry such person but he will be accountable before God for false testimony. After all, does she want to be the wife to one who lied to Allah?

Why girls have to wear hijab

Question:

Assalamualaikum!!

I would be very delighted if you could clarify this question- Why girls wear hijab in Islam and boys don’t (considering both have to observe lowering their gazes).

Apologies, I am not the one with this query. I have a non Muslim friend who has raised this question in a discussion. Being a girl, I feel obliged to take a stand for Islam. I don’t normally join such discussions but I feel this one time, I should.

Please provide a full explanation of hijab, what is the essence of wearing it, why girls have to wear it and not boys, etc.

JazakAllah Khair!!

Answer:

Wa `alaykum salam,

Hijab is a means of protection. Please view this video, Hijab Garden, for further explanation.

Zakat: Mode of Payment and Distribution

Question:

ASSALAMU ALAIKUM WA RAHMATHULLAHI WA BARAKATHUHU
DEAR.
PLEASE GUIDE ME ABOUT ZAKATH AND THE MODE OF PAYMENT AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM. IS IT PERMITTED TO GIVE ANY ORGANIZATIONS WHO CLAIM THAT THEY WIIL DISTRIBUTE. IF OK. WHAT IS THE MODE OF OPERATION. I WANT THE ANSWERS TO MATCH WITH THE OPINION OF ULAMAS BELONGING TO THE MADHABS.
I BELONG TO SHAFI MADHAB.
THANKING YOU
REGARDS MA ASSALAMATH

Answer:

Wa `alaykum salam,

Zakat is an obligatory welfare contribution. The minimum amount is 2.5% from one’s surplus wealth, based on the Nisab. Refer to a Zakat slideshow from Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Shafi’i) with links to Zakat information and calculation here. (You have to refer to your local authorities who shall determine the Nisab amount from which to calculate how much you should contribute).

Four conditions of Zakat:
1. The person is a Muslim.
2. The person has full ownership of the wealth.
3. Nisab is reached: Nisab is the market value of 86 grams of gold.
4. Haul is completed: Possession of the assets for one Hijrah year or 355 days.

If the organization claims to distribute the Zakat collected you may give it to them and they will be responsible.  You should be able to obtain information about their distribution (if you so wish). Otherwise (in Shafi’i) you must locate at least 1 person in each of the 8 categories who are eligible to receive Zakat and distribute to them evenly:

1. The poor – Fuqara’
2. Needy – Al-Masakin
3. Those employed to collect the Zakat – `Amileen `alayha
4. Those whose hearts are to be won – Mu’allafatu Qulubihim
5. Those enslaved, to free the captives – Ar-Riqaab
6. Those in debt – Al Ghaarimeen
7. Those who work for the cause of God – Fi sabilillah
8. Wayfarer – Ibn as-Sabeel

Prayer Request: Anxiety

Prayer Request:

Salaam Aleikum,
I am in a new country and battling severe anxiety. I feel spiritual when I am by myself but I feel horrible when I am working outside. My employment states that I take off hijab and feel very torn by it. The laws of this country are that nobody is allowed to wear any religious symbols in public institutions. I don’t feel spiritual in my work environment. I want to be completely devoted to the path of tasawwuf and feel so much love in my heart for Allah, Rasulullah & the path of sufism. Please give me advice on how to handle my situation better and please pray for me. Due to my dysfunctional mindset, I am unable to be happy when I am in a social environment. Please give me the proper spiritual guidance so that I may be able to handle this dunya better. Jazakallah khairon.

Response:

wa `alaykum salam,

Insha-Allah Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani is praying for you.

Since you are obliged to work, you must try to adapt and carry the burden of removing your hijab. This is the time when someone holding fast to his religion is like someone holding onto a burning coal. The only way to survive is for Allah swt’s Mercy to reach you and relieve that stress.

Recite: Ya naari koonee bardan wa salaama 100x and blow on yourself, and ask Mawlana’s support, insha-Allah you will find things easier.

Dream: Saw Sheikh Mehmet and I have never met him

Dream:

Aslamo Aleikum Mawlana Shaykh Kabbani,
I saw a dream where I am at a place that appears to be the bottom of graves, but the base is finished neatly and in pale coloured stone. The entrance is of lower height and as the rows of graves continue the height ascends as if rounded or domed. I am being asked by Sheikh Mehmet to go inside and collect rose petals (pale pink) that have fallen from some of the grave bases that are open. I am not aware of anyone else present, I think I have been inside once and when asked again I politely refuse as I am afraid. I am told by Sheikh Mehmet that I must now collect butterflies that will appear from some of the bases, he has a bag in his hand, it is green and lush around.
What does this mean?

Wa Salam

Interpretation:

Wa `alaykum salam,

It means that insha-Allah, Allah swt makes your grave rawdatan min riyad al-janna and you will be happy there collecting the jewels of knowledge.
