Playing of instruments in Islam

Question:

Assalamulaimkum,

I have a question about the playing of the doumbek or any other instrument within Islamic songs, naats and nasheeds.
My cousin has been going on about how its haram to play any instrument apart from duff.

Can you please tell me a hadith or something that I can explain to him that it is not haram.

May Allah give Shaykh Nazim and Shaykh Hisham his deputy long life.

JazakAllah Khairan

Answer:

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,

was-salat was-salam `ala Sayyidina Muhammadin wa `ala aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een,

Here is a relatively strict interpretation of what is and what is not permitted from music/sama . We will provide you with other more lenient views later if you desire:

Qadi Abu Tayyib said:

To hear sama from such a woman who can be married is not lawful according to the disciples of Imam Shafi`i who said that it is makruh (disliked) to ring musical instruments by means of a stick and that it was used in order to divert the attention of the people (from remembrance of Allah). Imam Malik prohibited songs. This is in accordance with the hadith of the Prophet (saw) mentioning girls known as Qainaat who would sing among the drunkards. Imam Abu Hanifah said that sama is makruh (disliked) and to hear songs is sinful. Hazrat Sufiyan Thawri, Hammad, Ibrahim Shu`bi and other learned men of Kufa from among the Salaf (first three generations after the Prophet (s)) gave similar opinions.

Abu Talib Makki after quoting the opinion of many learned men said that sama is lawful. He said that Hazrat Abdullah Mua`wiyah and other Companions of the Prophet (s) used to hear sama . He said that on fixed days of blessing, the Meccans used to hear sama . The Medinites also used to hear them. Insha-Allah the following is a clarification of the use of sama.

Imam Ghazzali’s Conditions for sama Being Commendable:

(Imam al-Ghazalli’s “Ihya” in the first chapter of the “Book of Sama’ and Wajd“, in the second Volume)

We will cite five from the conditions which Imam Ghazali cited for sama being commendable:

1. Songs of pilgrims. They roam from one country to another with songs and flutes. These songs are lawful, and they describe poetry relating to Ka`aba, the Black Stone, Zamzam and other signs of Allah. These arouse (desired) sentiments for visiting the Ka`aba and other holy places.

2. Songs of mourning. It is of two kinds, commendable and not commendable. It is not commendable to recite songs which increase sorrow for past mishaps and calamities. The Quran says: – “lest you do not grieve for what missed you,” to express sorrow for the dead falls within this class of songs, as it expresses dissatisfaction at the order of God.

Mourning-songs are commendable when men express sorrow for past sins. For this sin, Adam wept for forgiveness and Prophet David’s songs were for forgiveness. Owing to his melodious songs, many people expired. This action is praiseworthy and to give encouragement for this is also praiseworthy.

3. Songs at the time of festivals. It increases joy and happiness at the time of festivals and other days of expressing happiness, for this happens at the time of two `Eids, marriage festivals, birth ceremony when a child is born and at the time of circumcision.

4. Songs of lovers. These increase love towards God and give satisfaction and pleasure to mind. It is also lawful. If the union with a strange girl or woman is unlawful, songs for her love is also unlawful.

5. Songs on the part of one who seeks the love and pleasure of God and to meet with Him, is lawful.

Sama is Unlawful in Five Cases:

1. To hear sama from a woman whose look excites sexual desire. Beardless young men may also be included in this category if sexual desire is aroused at their sight. This illegality is not for songs but for women and beardless young men.

2. Instruments used for the songs of drunkards are unlawful as they remind of unlawful things and incite unlawful action of wine-drinking and intoxicants. These are majamirawtar and kubah but not daff (drum), flute and other musical instruments.

3. Obscene talk in sama is unlawful. If there are any obscene talks in poetry, useless talk and inferences against God, His Prophet, upon whom be peace, and the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, they are unlawful. If there are descriptions of a particular woman and not of women in general, and narrations of the beauties of a particular woman before the people, they are unlawful.

4. If any evil or immoral desire arises in mind or by hearing songs, it will be unlawful.

5. If habits are formed for hearing sama , it is unlawful. Excess of any thing is bad. If too much food is taken it is bad for health. If too much oil is besmeared on the face, it looks ugly, similarly if too many sama songs are heard, it forms into a harmful habit. After strenuous effort and hard labor sama songs and innocent enjoyments are not harmful.

As can be seen there is a wide range of opinions, and as in everything related to the faith, “actions are by intentions.”

Dream: Dream: illah bi idthnillah

Dream:

Dearest Shuyukh, Assalamu alaykum wa rahmat Allahi wa barakatahu,

Some months ago, I saw a Western man saying: ‘illah bi idthnillah‘ with very firm conviction and forcefully. No one else was in the dream and he was wearing either a black or navy blue t-shirt.

Please could I humbly ask you for the interpretation? Thank you with all my heart for all your time, effort and expertise, maashaAllah. May Allah SWT reward you all most generously and special thanks to Hajjah Naziha whose help I asked for recently and have experienced miraculous benefits and easing of my problems, maashaAllah. Thank you especially to Sheikh Hisham too, whose salams and duas have brought about miracles in my life. Thank you.

Interpretation:

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,

Allahuma Salli `ala Muhammad,

As-Salamu `Alaykum,

The western man represents how the world is moving ever so closely to the reliance of Allah. The belief that technology solves all problems, which in some instances has become a religion, is crumbling.

And Allah knows best
Sallu `Alayhi!

Dream: Hazrat Ali in Dream

Dream:

Driving in a bad snow storm. There are cars crashed. It is dangerous so we start walking. We can see large city buildings. There is a loud bang. Then we see fireworks. I’m with my wife, looking out a window. I see a few men on horses, with bows and arrows. My wife turns to me and says do you know who that is. She says it’s Hazrat Ali. These men come to the window. We both say shahada. They look at us. One of them pulls out his bow and arrow and shoots my wife. But it is gentle. He looks at me, but doesn’t shoot. Outside is chaos, bloody people. I feel as though these men are looking into my heart. My wife is up now, she looks at me and starts talking as if nothing happened. I feel panic, than I see blackness. And wake up.

Interpretation:

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,

Allahuma Salli `ala Muhammad,

As-Salamu `Alaykum,

Mawlana is sending you signs of the last days when there will be a lot of fitna, tribulations. It is said that many Sahabah and Awliya return to witness the events of Sayyidina al-Mahdi (as), and Sayyidina `Ali (ra) is the sign of that. Your wife being struck by Sayyidina `Ali (ra) is a sign of Allah accepting her as a Shahida.

Dream: Mawlana Sheykh Nazim and the White man

Dream:

in front of Mawlana sitting in a small stone house
He ordered me to host a man with a special appearance that I recognize in seeing him and bring him back. I went out, without knowing where to go, there was nobody Suddenly in front of me I saw an old man with a long white beard and white clothes and very simple. He was accompanied with a billy goat with long white hairs, very luminous, and his eyes were not from goat but from human being, His horns were very long and going horizontally. I said: “it must be you that I wait, I must bring you to Mawlana, please follow me” In fact, he passed me and walked very quickly, and I lost them. I was afraid and I run to prevent Mawlana… they all 3 where waiting me, and when I came in they begin to laugh

Interpretation:

wa `alaykum salam,

The man Mawlana Shaykh Nazim asked you to host is your spiritual reality and it appears as a pious shaykh because that is what your inner reality consists of. The goat represents ego, and its best friend, Shaytan, and coming with human eyes means its character is dominant. So Mawlana is signifying by that dream that you must be hospitable to your spiritual side and then your “goatness” (stubbornness, anger, revenge, greed) will turn to human character, insha-Allah, where all three aspects may live together in harmony. Focus on your `ibadah and awrad, reciting Quran and Dala’il al-Khayrat and insha-Allah you will succeed in this.

Dream: istikhaarah

Dream:

Salaam,

This dream occurred when I was in Makkah during Ramadan 2010. I prayed istikharah about my ex-fiancé (who wanted to get back to me again), and the dream was as follows:

I dreamed that my parents were bringing me to this really huge house but there were statues of elephants everywhere on the fences of that huge mansion (seemed almost hinduish). Also, I dreamed my parents were forcing me to get married to this boy whose face looked evil/dark or covered with a black veil. In fact, the whole family was. Then I dreamed I signed some papers (not sure what, could be a nikah nama) and then I ran out of the house, and I saw my good friend in white robes smiling at me and he even drove a white car. I was so happy after, then the dream ended.

Interpretation:

audhu billah mina ‘sh-shaytani ‘r-rajeem,

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,

The first family is not suitable for you. It appears in this dream that your ‘friend’ is the better choice.

Wa’Allahu a`lam

Was Prophet Dhul-Kifl possibly The Great Buddha ?

Question:

As-salaam Alaikum Ya Seyyidi and all the other Scholars,
I thank Allah for this opportunity that we can clear out doubts by question to you Directly. Recently e.shaykh has been answering questions regarding prophets in India. I read somewhere that Dhul-Kifl may perhaps be the name of Buddha, the consonant ‘p’ is not present in Arabic, and the nearest one to it is ‘fa’. Hence, Kifl may be actually ‘Kapeel’ which is the place where he was often referred to. Some are of opinion that Dhul-Kifl is an Arabic name for ‘Ezekiel’. Also How authentic is this reference- Mohammad (PBUH) said “There was a prophet of Allah in India who was dark in color and his name was Kahan.”Source:- “Taarikh-i-Hamdaan Dailami” Baab-ul-Kaaf. See Pocket book p: 854 by Malik Abdur Rehman Khadim 6th edition Published in 1952.
Many Thanks for Guiding us Insha Allah

Answer:

wa `alaykum as-Salam wa rahmatullah, and thank you for your questions.  Another question to ask might be whether the words nun, qarnayn, or awtad are also to be understood as place names? This linguistic speculation on kifl ignores the Arabic significance of the word, as well as the well-established Islamic traditions concerning Dhul-Kifl, peace be upon him. For the best account of them, illuminated moreover by direct spiritual knowledge, please consult the second volume of Lore of Light.

Your reference to the post on “Siva” allows for an interesting observation: while the 27 chapters of the Fusus ul-hikam are for the most part named for the 27 Qur’anic prophets, there are differences, and in particular concerning the prophet Dhul-Kifl. His name is not found in the Fusus, so his spiritual identity must be related to that of another prophet. Seth, peace be upon him, included among the fusus, is not mentioned by name in the Holy Qur’an.

As far as the Buddha is concerned, and again in reference to the earlier post, it is likely that his spiritual identity may be linked to one or another of the 27. There is in fact a relationship between his historical manifestation and the planet Mercury – Budha in Sanskrit – so perhaps his spiritual affinity may be discovered among those prophets in Islam who are associated with that sphere.

Concerning the hadith you mention, in the words of Shaykh Gibril Fouad Haddad there is no such hadith and Allah knows best.

Burning Incense

Question:

Assalam alaykum dear Shaykh Hisham, Hajjah and blessed shuyukh,

I heard that it is not good to burn certain or all types of incense in the home because they might attract negative energy and scare the angels away. Is this true? If not, what type is best to burn, such as rose or the traditional Arab kind like oud and bukhoor burner using coal?

Also, is using fragrance oils in the home OK?

Thank you and May Allah Most High elevate your ranks!

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

It is Sunnah to wear fragrances on you or burn them in your home. You may use any bukhoor or oil for your home – in fact, any fragrance you prefer. Don’t listen to empty talk. Fragrances are positive energy and will attract the angels and the saints. Prophet Muhammad (s) loved fragrances and he never refused an offer for any fragrance to put on or to burn in his house. It is only a house that stinks will angels get turned off while the jinns and shaytans will gather.

Prayer Request: Success in My Daughter’s Studies

Request:

My daughter age 14 years named [private], is a very good child. She has performed umra and says her prayers. She studies very hard, but her results are so disappointing. I am a highly educated mother. I take a lot of interest in her work. I was an excellent student myself. I also volunteer for many activities in her school. My daughter tries to participate in things, but she is NEVER selected for anything. Like she is invisible. All the people I know, are so proud because their children are doing in school. My poor child, she hides her pain in her heart. Why is this? It is not normal, so much effort and no reward. She works so hard. The teachers say she is well behaved and responsible. Her best friends get selected, and win awards. Not her. Why? Please tell me prayers can I say for her.

Response:

You are describing what sounds to be a wonderful child. She is obedient to Allah, her parents and her studies. She is pious, kind and responsible–these are qualities that make for a wonderful human being that insha-Allah will contribute a lot to society, just maybe in ways you didn’t expect. Be patient and continue to encourage her to do her best and insha-Allah her true calling will become clear to you.
